Dear Dr. Tyler,

I applaud your sentiment that "we must do a better job of establishing a safe and respectful campus environment."  Meaning no disrespect, I ask have to ask - what steps have you taken thus far to accomplish this? You have publically accused our students of being violent, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Your condescending and disrespectful letter to the president of the faculty union was posted on the home page of our college website for two weeks. Neither of these actions has helped to foster a respectful campus environment. Furthermore, another critical factor that causes the campus environment to be lacking in respect is the fact that the Special Trustee With Extraordinary Powers continues to refuse to hold open and public board meetings where public comment can be offered and recorded.

I applaud your three initiatives that are an attempt to change the campus climate and promote one with more respect. Can you please answer these questions about each initiative?

Your first initiative to establish an independent review by an outside consultant is an important and necessary step. Can you explain the process for how this consultant will be chosen and what protocols will be in place to ensure that it is truly independent and objective?

Your second initiative to appoint a Task Force on Civil Discourse and Campus Climate that will assess campus climate and formulate processes and procedures for ensuring open, free, safe and respectful dialogue among and between the college constituencies inspires hope. Can you explain the process for how the members of this task force will be chosen and what protocols will be followed to ensure that is it truly independent and objective?

Your third initiative for the College's Crisis Management Team to host a forum, open to the community, for discussing all issues before the college is laudable. It begs the question; why not just have this accomplished by having open and public board meetings? Nonetheless, can you explain how this "Management Team" fits into Participatory Governance as it is not listed as a committee or sub-committee of the Participatory Governance Council? Who are the members on this team and how were they chosen? Are there protocols that ensure that this team is independent and objective and truly reflects the CCSF campus community?
