For those engineering students who are aspiring but do not have any idea about what this branch of engineering does; it is important that they go through Fundamentals of Engineering Economics by Park.
This book gives the students a clear picture about what the discipline actually is. It is very enlightening to read about how economics affects a person's life. It also gives an overall view to the whole engineering subject. The overall message of this text is that economic concepts are used not only in this field but in all engineering fields as well.
Park starts off with his introduction chapter which gives a brief background on Park's educational background and his reasons for writing Fundamentals of Engineering Economics. After the intro, he proceeds to the topics of economics of advanced technologies, institutional economics, general economics, decision theory, microeconomics, optimization, central banks, international trade, business cycles, monetary policy, and globalization. He finishes up the book with chapters such as technology, welfare cost analysis, firm pricing, investment, banking, microenterprise, innovation, pricing, and political economy. This book contains many useful insights. However, I feel that some of these topics are a bit too broad for the graduate engineering students who are aiming for an economics specialization.
Overall, I believe that the main goal of reading Fundamentals of Engineering Economics by Park is to equip the young engineers with enough knowledge on the different topics that they would learn in an engineering course. The main strength of this text is that it covers all the areas that are required to study in Engineering Colleges like discrete math, calculus, optimization, and software engineering. It should be remembered that Engineering is a growing field therefore there will be more additions to the books on finance, economics, and other areas of study in the years to come. For a student, it is always better if they go through a text book rather than browsing on the internet. This is because of the fact that reading a text book allows you to understand the concept of the text much faster than surfing on the internet. The only negative point that I can mention about this text is that it is a little too general in its coverage.
