In the first semester of College Management in the program for Engineering Design with Solid Works, students will participate in a guided self directed training exercise in the field of engineering design. This is a hands-on design experience that prepares students to work with engineers and design teams to develop solutions to real-world design challenges.
The objective of this experience is to educate students in the skills necessary for them to become successful architects and engineers. This training will not only provide students with the necessary skills to complete projects; it will also help them build a solid understanding of design cost-saving strategies and be able to communicate those concepts to management. It is important to note that all students who take this class will receive a passing score on the final exam.
Engineering Design with Solid Works (ETW) is a self directed two week training course that will introduce students to architectural and engineering practices through detailed case studies and actual project implementation. Students will become aware of common practices such as cost estimating and scheduling drawings, as well as the benefits of design-cycle management, cost analysis and scheduling templates. This course will also introduce students to the basics of CAD software, including AutoCAD, Plume, XEPro, and UltraDraw. A review of commonly used engineering terms and symbols will reinforce the knowledge gained in previous engineering design classes, while students will learn how to interpret engineering drawings and discuss designing strategies.
Following the introductory section of Engineering Design with Solid Works students will gain the necessary skills to successfully design a concept using AutoCAD. The second week of the course will introduce students to mechanical engineering topics such as dynamic and kinetic calculations for various loads and stresses and their effect on the solids. Engineering design with solids requires the understanding of all the physical and logical principles of solid mechanics. Designing projects based upon solid mechanics requires the student to analyze all the variables, weigh the consequences of each option, and decide which option will yield the best results. All problems in engineering are categorized into different areas in accordance with their nature, and students will need to be able to identify the appropriate category for each problem.
