No game this week; I'm in North Carolina for military training. I am NOT scuttling the campaign. I like it too much, myself.
I think I need to set some rules:
I am not changing campaigns.
I am not deliberately changing the group up. (Two players have asked to join, we are currently not more than 6 players, and this is the time Family Game Store makes group changes. None of this is related to D&D Next)
Because this is when FGS changes their group schedule, I asked about changing our game night. Thursdays work best for everyone, so there is no change.
Why did I choose to start this campaign using 4e rules instead of 3.5, pathfinder, basic, 2ed, or any other system?
Transparency.
In my opinion, there is a range of roleplaying. At one end is free-form, no rules whatsoever. The other end is a physics modeling engine, where everything has rules.
The goal of a roleplaying game is to create mechanics to resolve character conflict when the players disagree, while minimizing the rules players have to follow in order to play.
I feel that 4e is closer to that ideal than previous systems of D&D.
Characters should be driven by their personality, not their sheet. That's why I had everyone answering background questions to build from.
Now, with all of that out of the way, why would I want to risk losing this campaign with a new system?
To improve transparency.
The less we are limited by the rules, the better.
If Next makes the game easier, we can recreate the same characters in the new version. (DM Fiat for rules) No problem.
If it doesn't, then we toss their rules and go back to what works.
Either way, we lose very little time, when I plan to bring the group to Epic Destiny levels.
In the meantime, I've already added to the campaign world to include this short adventure.
Feel free to reply all to discuss this.
I have always seen playtesting as "how do I prove this doesn't work", so it has always been fun for me.
That's right!
(But if you want to show up and play board games with Bart anyway feel
free!)
