As of July 1, 2021, Florida law prohibits code inspectors from initiating investigations of potential violations of codes and ordinances by way of anonymous complaints. It also requires persons reporting potential violations to provide contact information before an investigation occurs. If the Code Compliance officer has reason to believe the alleged violation presents an imminent threat to public health, safety, or welfare or imminent destruction of habitat or sensitive resources, then the prohibition does not apply.
Code Compliance consists of Administrative and Field staff. Code Compliance Officers are assigned to geographic zones within the City and are responsible to investigate complaints and obtain compliance within their zone. When an issue is identified, Officers partner with other departments in a holistic approach and utilize all available resources to resolve the issue.
Administrative staff receive complaint information from the public and process case records generated by officers in the field. Special Magistrates, who are licensed attorneys, adjudicate cases that fail to come into voluntary compliance.
