Dear BSNA and GBC Family,
Wishing you and your families a Very Happy Shri Krishna Janmashtami!
Shri Krishna Janmashtami is also known
as Krishnashtami, Gokulashtami, Ashtami Rohini, Srikrishna Jayanti and Sree Jayanthi.
On this day devotees observe fast and perform puja during midnight (Nishita Kala) using sixteen steps (Shodashopachara; षोडशोपचार) puja vidhi. No grains should be consumed during Janmashtami fasting until the fast is broken on next day after sunrise when both Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nakshtra (or at least one) are over.
Two Krishna Janmashtami Dates
The followers of Vaishnavism observe Janmashtami day based on Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nakshatra, while the followers of Smartism consider the day which has the most auspicious combination of Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nakshatra during midnight (Nishita kala). Therefore, this year Janmashtami is observed on September 4th by Smartas and on 5th by Vaishnavas.
Jai Shri Krishna!
