The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB in Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change) prescribe standards to control auto-exhaust in India. Started 2000 as ‘India 2000’ and subsequently updated to BS2 (2005), BS3 (2010), BS4 (2017) and finally bypassing BS5, BS6 (01-04-2020). The Indian BSVI is at par with EURO6 standards of 2020.
Improvements in emission with BSVI are
Pollutant limit BS4 to BS6
Petrol
Nitrogen Oxide NOx 80 to 60 mg
Particulate Matter 4.5 mg/km to Nil
Diesel
Nitrogen Oxide NOx 250 to 80 mg
Particulate Matter 25 to 4.5 mg/km
Hydrocarbon + NOx 300to 170 mg/km
The sulphur content of BS-VI fuel, which is five times lower than that in BS-IV fuel. Using BS6 diesel in BS4 vehicle might wear engine for low sulfur content needed as lubricant. The BSVI engine may have one or more of the following featurtes to meet emission norms:
Diesel particulate filters (reduce PM)
Selective Catalytic Reduction (reduce NOx)
Microprocessor (Precise reaction timing)
Hybrid engine (fuel efficiency)
Direct injection (Low CO)
