To:
qc_iit...@googlegroups.comYes we'll have the non comp this week.Concerned group do tell me which date is convenient is with you guys.
I agree with the major structure; with the main change being:
- In a 4 teams per pool;3 pool scenario each team has to nominate 6 members in advance off which 3 would have to be freshers.During elimination a 3 member team(2+fresher) would compete other such teams from other hostels. There would only be one such round and not two as proposed by prachi .Essentially all freshers have to play atleast one match.
Everything else remains the same.To be on the safe side start preparing questions which would be used during the elimination match-ups.30 question would suffice.
As for the Cat B comp, this is what prachi had to say!
Abstract: This proposal pertains to the Category B event to be organized by QC at some point in the current semester. It first elucidates Plan B a.k.a. the Safety Net and then goes on to discuss possible variants for Plan A, namely, a quiz in playoff format.
I. The Safety Net
There is a basic template usually adhered to in the organization of IITD quizzes, comprising of the following:
- Date/Time: 8:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. on any weekday
- Venue: SAC-CR
- Structure: 3-member teams, 1 direct entry from each hostel + 3 wildcards selected through written prelims
- Format: Infinite Bounce
- Materials and Apparatus Required: QM, questions, booking of the projector and venue, posters, participants
In the frequent event that absolutely nothing else can be thought of or implemented, we always have recourse to the above. For the upcoming Cat B, the current plan is to get an external QM from Kutub Quizzers and leave the rest of the template unaltered. This is an exceedingly safe way to organize a quiz since we all know the only thing that can go wrong is a lack of advance planning/publicity translating to a lack of any or all of the Materials and Apparatus Required.
If we are to organize this sort of quiz, we have ample time to plan it out and little actual work to do. On the other hand, if we are to introduce any of the variations that have previously been discussed, we will need to give it some more thought and debate. Since there is not a lot of the semester left, it would be expedient to begin doing so right away and have things decided by the end of the midsem break.
II. The Playoff Quiz
The basic idea is that instead of packing 14-odd teams into a chair-scarce space, we have head-to-head quizzes, as in sports leagues or EDLC's PD. There have been several proposed structures and formats for this.
A. The Structure
- Pools of 4x3 or 3x4, decided based on either a draw of lots or a seeding system using past performance as an indicator to ensure strong teams do not eliminate each other in the early rounds. 3x4 would have 1 qualifier per pool, 4x3 would have 1 per pool + 1 lucky loser (second from one of the pools with points differential as the decider).
- Hold it on a weekend. Day 1: Written faceoff marathon eliminations in the pools with the questions being contributed equally by the rest of the players in order to ensure fairness. Day 2: Semifinals and finals. External QM.
- 6-member teams from each hostel. The entire team will not participate together in every round.
B. The Format
The math reveals that we'll need each team to submit somewhere between 15 and 30 questions for this.
- Eliminations: Each team is divided into groups of 3 and there are 2 rounds, with one group from each team facing off with one group from the other. Or groups of <=4 with the requirement that each member must play at least one round. This is very tentative.
- Semis and Finals: These will be melanges. There will be several rounds in various different formats. For example:
- one-on-one quizzing (one member from each team answering, as was proposed for the cancelled AV quiz)
- normal game-style quizzing (tree with a race to the finish/extended tic-tac-toe)
- rapid-fire/buzzer rounds (the technicalities will be taken care of)
- hooray Infinite Bounce! :P
This is going to be a very marathonesque quiz, so the idea is to allow all the players breaks in between. So every round must have at most n people participating. This will ensure entire teams don't get drained and forfeit.
C. Comments on the above
This obviously needs a lot of thinking over. Alternatives we have are
- holding the elimination rounds on weekdays as they won't take much time and saving the weekend for the semis and finals, one each day, which will reduce our work
- having verbal elimination rounds like on quiz shows, all infinite bounce
- getting the external QMs to do the elims as well
- anything else
We'll discuss and see what kind of framework we can put in place and keep building on it. In the following suggested order
- round robin, faceoff format
- variations on quiz format
- elim questions prepared internally.
If nothing - Safety Net.
