to San Antonio JUG
So here's what's going on. I started this incarnation (there have been others) of the San Antonio JUG a handful of years ago. It's always been pretty informal, and we've been fortunate in finding some solid supporters that have let us meet over the years at little to no cost. Its success, therefore, has always been fairly proportional to how much time and effort I could put into it. My kids have gotten older and take up more of my time, and I moved out of Java development over a year ago, so I haven't been involved in the Java world very much. That makes for not a lot of time for Java-related activities. Some time back, David Kowis stepped in to take over some of the leadership of the JUG, while I still helped out with the logistics. He recently moved to Dallas, which has some obvious repercussions on his ability to participate in this JUG. I could keep the meetings going, but with the time I can commit at this point, it'll likely be no more than a monthly place to meet and chat and eat. I don't want to short-change y'all, so...

This is me tossing the ball into your court. If someone out there wants to step in and take over running the JUG, a lot of the infrastructure is already here, so you can skip the whole "getting started" phase, which was a pain :p It's a time commitment, though not a huge one, and your biggest problem will be finding good speakers with good content. That's the lifeblood of the JUG. It'll help if you're interested in doing some talks of your own so you can fill in on the down months.

If not, I'm content to say we had a good run with lots of good internal and external content over the years, and stop the monthly meetings. We could keep the mailing list alive, though I'm almost the only one who ever uses it.

Pipe up with your thoughts or opinions.

Hey Ryan I was wondering if you would be interested in meeting for lunch sometime to talk about what it would entail to keep this going. I might be interested in taking over, as I just moved from Android development back to the pure java world.

Yes, I can do lunch.

On the subject of IntelliJ licenses, JetBrains has updated their free license policy, and the future of free licenses is in doubt unless the JUG picks up steam, i.e. attendance.

Even though graduate school has kept me away from the JUG, it will be a big mistake not keep it going. The JVM is now the leading application platform. I think USAA should step up to the plate. They have a huge investment in Java. What about Josh?

Jug still meets at New Horizons? They have been very generous.

UTSA has a new CS building. There is paid covered parking close by. I can check to see if UTSA can provide meeting space. They do so for CyberSecurity Events. One advantage of meeting at UTSA would be the venue and the ability to recruit students that would fill out the ranks.
