Namo Namah
In the course of Dharma Shastra awareness series we try to educate people on yet another important planetary combust or Moudyam which occurs on the above dates. No auspicious Samskara functions such as Choulam, Upanayana and Vivaha should be conducted during planetary / graha moudyam period. Read on to know the details.
Let us understand what is meant by *Moudyam / Astamanam* as called in Sanskrit or planetary combust in English. Planet *Guru* (Jupiter) is the *Adishtana Devata* for *Rig Veda*, planet *Shukra (Venus) for Yajur Veda* and *Mangala (Mars) for Sama Veda*.
*Moudyam* is a period in which each of these planets on different dates, such as Guru comes in a 9° alignment with the Sun and Shukra comes in a 6° 36’ alignment the Sun and Mangala at 15° alignment with the Sun. Since they come at this close alignment to the Sun, they lose their own power and get totally hidden by the Tejas/ Prakasha of the Sun and thus lose their own power to influence any auspicious function performed by us. Thus, they get hidden under the power of Sun and this is called Moudyam or Astamanam.
Dharma Shastras mention that no auspicious functions such as Choulam, Upanayana and Vivaha should be performed by *Rig Vedis during Guru moudyam* and no auspicious functions should be performed by *Yajur Vedis during Shukra Moudyam* and similarly *Samavedis should not plan any auspicious function during Mangala Moudyam*, because for their respective Vedas, they are the Adishtana Devatas whose Poorna Anugraham has to be there during auspicious ceremonies. These planets shouldn’t be in Moudyam for the respective Vedas. Thus Rigvedis fixing auspicious functions should avoid Guru Moudyam period, Yajurvedis fixing auspicious functions in their family should avoid Shukra Moudyam and Samavedis should avoid Mangala Moudyam.
What happens if we continue to perform the function in Moudyam? Shastras say it is forbidden, as Samskaras done during this period will not carry the blessings or anugraha of the Devata of that particular Veda and the ceremony itself will lose its power/ balam.
Unfortunately, due to severe ignorance in Kaliyuga, very few people are aware about this very important part in Jyotisha and Muhurtha Shastra. Not even those who call themselves learned pandits, who fix the function dates, are aware of this. The best option to postpone the dates in case any function is planned during this Moudyam period and if not, then there are elaborate pariharams which need to be performed as per Shastras, which is the very last option.
My request to all is to *forward/share this post to as many as possible* so that Dharma Shastra awareness can spread to more and more people. Let us not be ignorant of this important aspect and help all to perform their karma in proper time, in the proper way.
