The Liberation of Gajendra is a Puranic legend from the Astama skanda, 8th Skandha of the Bhagavata Purana.  In this episode, Vishnu came down to earth to protect Gajendra, the elephant, from the clutches of Makara, the Crocodile, and with Vishnu's help, Gajendra achieved moksha, or salvation.

A Telugu version was rendered by the poet Pothana in the 15th century Andhra Maha Bhagavatam. It is considered as "the crown jewel of Telugu literature".

ala vaikuMThapuraMbulO nagarilO nAmUla soudhaMbu dApala......
This is a verse which describes the palace of Lord Vishnu in his divine abode (VAIKUNTHA), at the time the elephant king prayed for the Lord's kindness to deliver him out of the deadly grip of crocodile in a lake.

The story goes that, one day, Pothana wrote the first line of the verse, but could not continue because he did not know how vaikuntha looks! So he paused the writing at that point, and went to farm (he was a cultivator by profession).  On his return the Poem was completed BUT by whom???  Let us hear from Dr. Bachampalli……
