SATAWU welcomes the suspension of pay increases for CEOs and board members of parastatals
14 March 2012

The South African Transport & Allied Workers’ Union (SATAWU) welcomes the long overdue announcement by Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba, that pay increases for CEOs and board members of parastatals will be suspended until a remuneration policy has been put in place.

We have been consistent in calling for this action as a union that organises in parastatals such as Transnet and PRASA. Last year SATAWU condemned the immoral and excessive salaries of state-owned entities executives after the Sunday Times reported that “14 Transnet’s top dogs snap at heels of private sector” in an article that clearly showed us that the issue of incentives paid to executives of state-owned enterprises should be reconsidered.

As a union representing workers employed in our parastatals, SATAWU will keep these high  figures in mind and use them to convince our members that they have every right to fight for big increases, so that we can start to narrow the chasm between rich and poor in South Africa.

They are perpetuating the widening of the gap between the poor and rich as their current pay continues to imitate those in the private sector. SATAWU is fully supportive of the decision taken by the Minister.  We share his great concern at that the “remuneration generally of executives is quite high and it doesn't contribute to bridging the inequality gaps between the highest paid and the lowest paid,"

If all these measures highlighted by the Minister are taken immediately and implemented wholeheartedly, we can narrow the deepening crisis of poverty, mass unemployment, escalating costs of basic necessities, fuel and transport which affects the workers and the poor.
