This ancient sport steeped in agrarian society with pronounced lineage of cattle breeding & rearing has been caught in fractious & often extremist debate ever since our Valiant Supreme Court (SC) stepped onto an Issue that was best left tor the Legislature to take a call. Even SC has fallen into the trap of framing contentious issues in the binaries of:
RURAL Vs. URBAN,
TRADITIONAL Vs. MODERN,
INDIGENOUS Vs. WESTERN;
and mostly comes out Erroneously in Favour of the Latter (against Jallikattu in Tamil Nadu or Bullock Cart Races or Dahi Handis of Maharashtra). At times though it also panders to Parochial Sentiments too ("Hinduism not a religion but a way life" {Representation of People Act} or "The Collective Conscience of the Nation" {Award of Death penalty to a Terror Suspect}).
