Jai Bhagwan Everyone,
Â
We have talked about the Soulâs existence in āŠķāŦāŠ°āŦ āŠāŠĪāŦāŠŪ-āŠļāŠŋāŠĶāŦāŠ§āŠŋ
āŠķāŠūāŠļāŦāŠĪāŦāŠ° before. After accepting the possibility of the Soulâs existence, the
disciple doubts about the Soulâs eternal nature and asks āŠŠāŠ°āŠŪāŠāŦāŠŠāŠūāŠģāŦ āŠĶāŦāŠĩ two questions:

(1) âāŠŽāŦāŠāŦ āŠķāŠāŠāŠū āŠĨāŠūāŠŊ āŠĪāŦāŠŊāŠūāŠ, āŠāŠĪāŦāŠŪāŠū āŠĻāŠđāŠŋ āŠ āŠĩāŠŋāŠĻāŠūāŠķ; āŠĶāŦāŠđāŠŊāŦāŠāŠĨāŦ āŠāŠŠāŠāŦ, āŠĶāŦāŠđāŠĩāŠŋāŠŊāŦāŠāŦ āŠĻāŠūāŠķ.â The second doubt is that the Soul is not eternal; it is born and dies with the body.

(2) âāŠ āŠĨāŠĩāŠū āŠĩāŠļāŦāŠĪāŦ āŠāŦāŠ·āŠĢāŠŋāŠ āŠāŦ, āŠāŦāŠ·āŠĢāŦ āŠāŦāŠ·āŠĢāŦ āŠŠāŠēāŠāŠūāŠŊ; āŠ āŠ āŠĻāŦāŠāŠĩāŠĨāŦ āŠŠāŠĢ āŠĻāŠđāŦāŠ, āŠāŠĪāŦāŠŪāŠū āŠĻāŠŋāŠĪāŦāŠŊ āŠāŠĢāŠūāŠŊ.â Or since the matter by changing every moment is momentary; the Soul is also momentary and not eternal.

āŠŠāŠ°āŠŪāŠāŦāŠŠāŠūāŠģāŦ āŠĶāŦāŠĩ answers discipleâs questions:

(1) âāŠĶāŦāŠđ āŠŪāŠūāŠĪāŦāŠ° āŠļāŠāŠŊāŦāŠ āŠāŦ, āŠĩāŠģāŦ āŠāŠĄ āŠ°āŦāŠŠāŦ āŠĶāŦāŠ°āŠķāŦāŠŊ; āŠāŦāŠĪāŠĻāŠĻāŠūāŠ āŠāŠĪāŦāŠŠāŠĪāŦāŠĪāŠŋ āŠēāŠŊ, āŠāŦāŠĻāŠū āŠ āŠĻāŦāŠāŠĩ āŠĩāŠķāŦāŠŊ?â The Body and the Soul coexist but they have opposite qualities. The Body is inanimate and does not know (āŠāŠĄ), it is visible (āŠ°āŦāŠŠāŦ) and can be seen (āŠĶāŦāŠ°āŠķāŦāŠŊ). While the āŠāŦāŠĪāŠĻ Soul knows, is invisible and cannot be seen. How could the inanimate Body know if the knower Soul is born and dead?

(2) âāŠāŦāŠĻāŠū āŠ āŠĻāŦāŠāŠĩ āŠĩāŠķāŦāŠŊ āŠ, āŠāŠĪāŦāŠŠāŠĻāŦāŠĻ āŠēāŠŊāŠĻāŦāŠ āŠāŦāŠāŠūāŠĻ; āŠĪāŦ āŠĪāŦāŠĨāŦ āŠāŦāŠĶāŠū āŠĩāŠŋāŠĻāŠū, āŠĨāŠūāŠŊ āŠĻ āŠāŦāŠŪāŦ āŠāŠūāŠĻ.â The Soul being the knower, knows the creation and destruction of an entity; the Soul would not be able know this without being separate from that entity.

(3) âāŠāŦ āŠļāŠāŠŊāŦāŠāŦ āŠĶāŦāŠāŠŋāŠŊāŦ, āŠĪāŦ āŠĪāŦ āŠ āŠĻāŦāŠāŠĩ āŠĶāŦāŠ°āŠķāŦāŠŊ; āŠāŠŠāŠāŦ āŠĻāŠđāŠŋ āŠļāŠāŠŊāŦāŠāŠĨāŦ, āŠāŠĪāŦāŠŪāŠū āŠĻāŠŋāŠĪāŦāŠŊ āŠŠāŦāŠ°āŠĪāŦāŠŊāŠāŦāŠ·.â The Soul is the knower of the coexistence with the Body; the eternal knower Soul cannot be made from such coexistence.

(4) âāŠāŠĄāŠĨāŦ āŠāŦāŠĪāŠĻ āŠāŠŠāŠāŦ, āŠāŦāŠĪāŠĻāŠĨāŦ āŠāŠĄ āŠĨāŠūāŠŊ; āŠāŠĩāŦ āŠ āŠĻāŦāŠāŠĩ āŠāŦāŠāŠĻāŦ, āŠāŦāŠŊāŠūāŠ°āŦ āŠāŠĶāŦ āŠĻ āŠĨāŠūāŠŊ.â It is not possible to make the knower Soul (āŠāŦāŠĪāŠĻ) from the inanimate Body (āŠāŠĄ) or make the inanimate Body from the knower Soul because they have opposite qualities.

(5) âāŠāŦāŠ āŠļāŠāŠŊāŦāŠāŦāŠĨāŦ āŠĻāŠđāŠŋ, āŠāŦāŠĻāŦ āŠāŠĪāŦāŠŠāŠĪāŦāŠĪāŠŋ āŠĨāŠūāŠŊ; āŠĻāŠūāŠķ āŠĻ āŠĪāŦāŠĻāŦ āŠāŦāŠāŠŪāŠūāŠ, āŠĪāŦāŠĨāŦ āŠĻāŠŋāŠĪāŦāŠŊ āŠļāŠĶāŠūāŠŊ.â Since the Soul cannot be made by combining of the matters, it cannot be destroyed into something else either. Thus, the Soul is eternal.

 (6) âāŠāŦāŠ°āŦāŠ§āŠūāŠĶāŠŋ āŠĪāŠ°āŠĪāŠŪāŦāŠŊāŠĪāŠū, āŠļāŠ°āŦāŠŠāŠūāŠĶāŠŋāŠāŠĻāŦ āŠŪāŠūāŠāŠŊ; āŠŠāŦāŠ°āŦāŠĩāŠāŠĻāŦāŠŪ āŠļāŠāŠļāŦāŠāŠūāŠ° āŠĪāŦ, āŠāŦāŠĩ āŠĻāŠŋāŠĪāŦāŠŊāŠĪāŠū āŠĪāŦāŠŊāŠūāŠāŠŊ.â The emotional intensity such as anger etcetera in Snake and others; displays the Soulâs previous life habits indicating the Soulâs eternal nature.

(7) âāŠāŠĪāŦāŠŪāŠū āŠĶāŦāŠ°āŠĩāŦāŠŊāŦ āŠĻāŠŋāŠĪāŦāŠŊ āŠāŦ, āŠŠāŠ°āŦāŠŊāŠūāŠŊāŦ āŠŠāŠēāŠāŠūāŠŊ; āŠŽāŠūāŠģāŠūāŠĶāŠŋ āŠĩāŠŊ āŠĪāŦāŠ°āŠĢāŦāŠŊāŠĻāŦāŠ, āŠāŦāŠāŠūāŠĻ āŠāŠāŠĻāŦ āŠĨāŠūāŠŊ.â The Soul is an eternal matter by nature but itâs passing states (āŠŠāŠ°āŦāŠŊāŠūāŠŊ) change; the Soul is the sole knower of the passing states such as child, adult and old etc.

(8) âāŠ āŠĨāŠĩāŠū āŠāŦāŠāŠūāŠĻ āŠāŦāŠ·āŠĢāŠŋāŠāŠĻāŦāŠ, āŠāŦ āŠāŠūāŠĢāŦ āŠĩāŠĶāŠĻāŠūāŠ°; āŠĩāŠĶāŠĻāŠūāŠ°āŦ āŠĪāŦ āŠāŦāŠ·āŠĢāŠŋāŠ āŠĻāŠđāŠŋ, āŠāа āŠ āŠĻāŦāŠāŠĩ āŠĻāŠŋāŠ°āŦāŠ§āŠūāŠ°.â If a speaker knows in first moment and states so in the next moment, the speaker and the knowledge cannot be momentary because the speaker and the knowledge have to exist in the next moment. You can ponder on this to confirm.

(9) âāŠāŦāŠŊāŠūāŠ°āŦ āŠāŦāŠ āŠĩāŠļāŦāŠĪāŦāŠĻāŦ, āŠāŦāŠĩāŠģ āŠđāŦāŠŊ āŠĻ āŠĻāŠūāŠķ; āŠāŦāŠĪāŠĻ āŠŠāŠūāŠŪāŦ āŠĻāŠūāŠķ āŠĪāŦ, āŠāŦāŠŪāŠūāŠ āŠāŠģāŦ āŠĪāŠŠāŠūāŠļ.â The matter can never be destroyed, if the knower Soul (āŠāŦāŠĪāŠĻ) is destroyed, check where its knowledge will mix with.

Based on the above discussion, our Soul is an eternal matter that cannot
be made or destroyed. This will help us to not fear the Bodyâs death because the
Body dies while our Soul moves on to a new Body. Our re-birth cycles will continue
until we get rid of all the Karma attached to the Soul with our Aradhana.

Let us pay gratitude to āŠŠāŠ°āŠŪāŠāŦāŠŠāŠūāŠģāŦ āŠĶāŦāŠĩ for passing on to us the essence of the Jain Scriptures by way of āŠķāŦāŠ°āŦ āŠāŠĪāŦāŠŪ-āŠļāŠŋāŠĶāŦāŠ§āŠŋ āŠķāŠūāŠļāŦāŠĪāŦāŠ° and leaving behind the Aradhana for us to shed all the Karma attached to the Soul.
