Jai Bhagwan Everyone,

 

We have talked about the Soul’s existence in શ્રી આત્મ-સિદ્ધિ શાસ્ત્ર before. After accepting the possibility of the Soul’s existence, the disciple doubts about the Soul’s eternal nature and asks પરમકૃપાળુ દેવ two questions:

 

(1) “બીજી શંકા થાય ત્યાં, આત્મા નહિ અવિનાશ; દેહયોગથી ઊપજે, દેહવિયોગે નાશ.” The second doubt is that the Soul is not eternal; it is born and dies with the body.

 

(2) “અથવા વસ્તુ ક્ષણિક છે, ક્ષણે ક્ષણે પલટાય; એ અનુભવથી પણ નહીં, આત્મા નિત્ય જણાય.” Or since the matter by changing every moment is momentary; the Soul is also momentary and not eternal.

 

પરમકૃપાળુ દેવ answers disciple’s questions:

 

(1) “દેહ માત્ર સંયોગ છે, વળી જડ રૂપી દ્રશ્ય; ચેતનનાં ઉત્પત્તિ લય, કોના અનુભવ વશ્ય?” The Body and the Soul coexist but they have opposite qualities. The Body is inanimate and does not know (જડ), it is visible (રૂપી) and can be seen (દ્રશ્ય). While the ચેતન Soul knows, is invisible and cannot be seen. How could the inanimate Body know if the knower Soul is born and dead?

 

(2) “જેના અનુભવ વશ્ય એ, ઉત્પન્ન લયનું જ્ઞાન; તે તેથી જુદા વિના, થાય ન કેમે ભાન.” The Soul being the knower, knows the creation and destruction of an entity; the Soul would not be able know this without being separate from that entity.

 

(3) “જે સંયોગો દેખિયે, તે તે અનુભવ દ્રશ્ય; ઊપજે નહિ સંયોગથી, આત્મા નિત્ય પ્રત્યક્ષ.” The Soul is the knower of the coexistence with the Body; the eternal knower Soul cannot be made from such coexistence.

 

(4) “જડથી ચેતન ઊપજે, ચેતનથી જડ થાય; એવો અનુભવ કોઈને, ક્યારે કદી ન થાય.” It is not possible to make the knower Soul (ચેતન) from the inanimate Body (જડ) or make the inanimate Body from the knower Soul because they have opposite qualities.

 

(5) “કોઈ સંયોગોથી નહિ, જેની ઉત્પત્તિ થાય; નાશ ન તેનો કોઈમાં, તેથી નિત્ય સદાય.” Since the Soul cannot be made by combining of the matters, it cannot be destroyed into something else either. Thus, the Soul is eternal.

 

 (6) “ક્રોધાદિ તરતમ્યતા, સર્પાદિકની માંય; પૂર્વજન્મ સંસ્કાર તે, જીવ નિત્યતા ત્યાંય.” The emotional intensity such as anger etcetera in Snake and others; displays the Soul’s previous life habits indicating the Soul’s eternal nature.

 

(7) “આત્મા દ્રવ્યે નિત્ય છે, પર્યાયે પલટાય; બાળાદિ વય ત્રણ્યનું, જ્ઞાન એકને થાય.” The Soul is an eternal matter by nature but it’s passing states (પર્યાય) change; the Soul is the sole knower of the passing states such as child, adult and old etc.

 

(8) “અથવા જ્ઞાન ક્ષણિકનું, જે જાણી વદનાર; વદનારો તે ક્ષણિક નહિ, કર અનુભવ નિર્ધાર.” If a speaker knows in first moment and states so in the next moment, the speaker and the knowledge cannot be momentary because the speaker and the knowledge have to exist in the next moment. You can ponder on this to confirm.

 

(9) “ક્યારે કોઈ વસ્તુનો, કેવળ હોય ન નાશ; ચેતન પામે નાશ તો, કેમાં ભળે તપાસ.” The matter can never be destroyed, if the knower Soul (ચેતન) is destroyed, check where its knowledge will mix with.

 

Based on the above discussion, our Soul is an eternal matter that cannot be made or destroyed. This will help us to not fear the Body’s death because the Body dies while our Soul moves on to a new Body. Our re-birth cycles will continue until we get rid of all the Karma attached to the Soul with our Aradhana.

 

Let us pay gratitude to પરમકૃપાળુ દેવ for passing on to us the essence of the Jain Scriptures by way of શ્રી આત્મ-સિદ્ધિ શાસ્ત્ર and leaving behind the Aradhana for us to shed all the Karma attached to the Soul.
