Jai Bhagwan Everyone,

We have talked about the Soul’s existence in āŠķāŦāаāŦ€ āŠ†āŠĪāŦāŠŪ-āŠļāŠŋāŠĶāŦāЧāŠŋ āŠķāŠūāŠļāŦāŠĪāŦāа before. After accepting the possibility of the Soul’s existence, the disciple doubts about the Soul’s eternal nature and asks āŠŠāŠ°āŠŪāŠ•āŦƒāŠŠāŠūāŠģāŦ āŠĶāŦ‡āŠĩ two questions:

(1) “āŠŽāŦ€āМāŦ€ āŠķāŠ‚āŠ•āŠū āŠĨāŠūāŠŊ āŠĪāŦāŠŊāŠūāŠ‚, āŠ†āŠĪāŦāŠŪāŠū āŠĻāŠđāŠŋ āŠ…āŠĩāŠŋāŠĻāŠūāŠķ; āŠĶāŦ‡āŠđāŠŊāŦ‹āŠ—āŠĨāŦ€ āŠŠāŠŠāŠœāŦ‡, āŠĶāŦ‡āŠđāŠĩāŠŋāŠŊāŦ‹āŠ—āŦ‡ āŠĻāŠūāŠķ.” The second doubt is that the Soul is not eternal; it is born and dies with the body.

(2) “āŠ…āŠĨāŠĩāŠū āŠĩāŠļāŦāŠĪāŦ āŠ•āŦāŠ·āŠĢāŠŋāŠ• āŠ›āŦ‡, āŠ•āŦāŠ·āŠĢāŦ‡ āŠ•āŦāŠ·āŠĢāŦ‡ āŠŠāŠēāŠŸāŠūāŠŊ; āŠ āŠ…āŠĻāŦāŠāŠĩāŠĨāŦ€ āŠŠāŠĢ āŠĻāŠđāŦ€āŠ‚, āŠ†āŠĪāŦāŠŪāŠū āŠĻāŠŋāŠĪāŦāŠŊ āŠœāŠĢāŠūāŠŊ.” Or since the matter by changing every moment is momentary; the Soul is also momentary and not eternal.

āŠŠāŠ°āŠŪāŠ•āŦƒāŠŠāŠūāŠģāŦ āŠĶāŦ‡āŠĩ answers disciple’s questions:

(1) “āŠĶāŦ‡āŠđ āŠŪāŠūāŠĪāŦāа āŠļāŠ‚āŠŊāŦ‹āŠ— āŠ›āŦ‡, āŠĩāŠģāŦ€ āŠœāŠĄ āŠ°āŦ‚āŠŠāŦ€ āŠĶāŦāаāŠķāŦāŠŊ; āŠšāŦ‡āŠĪāŠĻāŠĻāŠūāŠ‚ āŠ‰āŠĪāŦāŠŠāŠĪāŦāŠĪāŠŋ āŠēāŠŊ, āŠ•āŦ‹āŠĻāŠū āŠ…āŠĻāŦāŠāŠĩ āŠĩāŠķāŦāŠŊ?” The Body and the Soul coexist but they have opposite qualities. The Body is inanimate and does not know (āŠœāŠĄ), it is visible (āŠ°āŦ‚āŠŠāŦ€) and can be seen (āŠĶāŦāаāŠķāŦāŠŊ). While the āŠšāŦ‡āŠĪāŠĻ Soul knows, is invisible and cannot be seen. How could the inanimate Body know if the knower Soul is born and dead?

(2) “āŠœāŦ‡āŠĻāŠū āŠ…āŠĻāŦāŠāŠĩ āŠĩāŠķāŦāŠŊ āŠ, āŠ‰āŠĪāŦāŠŠāŠĻāŦāŠĻ āŠēāŠŊāŠĻāŦāŠ‚ āŠœāŦāŠžāŠūāŠĻ; āŠĪāŦ‡ āŠĪāŦ‡āŠĨāŦ€ āŠœāŦāŠĶāŠū āŠĩāŠŋāŠĻāŠū, āŠĨāŠūāŠŊ āŠĻ āŠ•āŦ‡āŠŪāŦ‡ āŠāŠūāŠĻ.” The Soul being the knower, knows the creation and destruction of an entity; the Soul would not be able know this without being separate from that entity.

(3) “āŠœāŦ‡ āŠļāŠ‚āŠŊāŦ‹āŠ—āŦ‹ āŠĶāŦ‡āŠ–āŠŋāŠŊāŦ‡, āŠĪāŦ‡ āŠĪāŦ‡ āŠ…āŠĻāŦāŠāŠĩ āŠĶāŦāаāŠķāŦāŠŊ; āŠŠāŠŠāŠœāŦ‡ āŠĻāŠđāŠŋ āŠļāŠ‚āŠŊāŦ‹āŠ—āŠĨāŦ€, āŠ†āŠĪāŦāŠŪāŠū āŠĻāŠŋāŠĪāŦāŠŊ āŠŠāŦāаāŠĪāŦāŠŊāŠ•āŦāŠ·.” The Soul is the knower of the coexistence with the Body; the eternal knower Soul cannot be made from such coexistence.

(4) “āŠœāŠĄāŠĨāŦ€ āŠšāŦ‡āŠĪāŠĻ āŠŠāŠŠāŠœāŦ‡, āŠšāŦ‡āŠĪāŠĻāŠĨāŦ€ āŠœāŠĄ āŠĨāŠūāŠŊ; āŠāŠĩāŦ‹ āŠ…āŠĻāŦāŠāŠĩ āŠ•āŦ‹āЈāŠĻāŦ‡, āŠ•āŦāŠŊāŠūāŠ°āŦ‡ āŠ•āŠĶāŦ€ āŠĻ āŠĨāŠūāŠŊ.” It is not possible to make the knower Soul (āŠšāŦ‡āŠĪāŠĻ) from the inanimate Body (āŠœāŠĄ) or make the inanimate Body from the knower Soul because they have opposite qualities.

(5) “āŠ•āŦ‹āЈ āŠļāŠ‚āŠŊāŦ‹āŠ—āŦ‹āŠĨāŦ€ āŠĻāŠđāŠŋ, āŠœāŦ‡āŠĻāŦ€ āŠ‰āŠĪāŦāŠŠāŠĪāŦāŠĪāŠŋ āŠĨāŠūāŠŊ; āŠĻāŠūāŠķ āŠĻ āŠĪāŦ‡āŠĻāŦ‹ āŠ•āŦ‹āЈāŠŪāŠūāŠ‚, āŠĪāŦ‡āŠĨāŦ€ āŠĻāŠŋāŠĪāŦāŠŊ āŠļāŠĶāŠūāŠŊ.” Since the Soul cannot be made by combining of the matters, it cannot be destroyed into something else either. Thus, the Soul is eternal.

 (6) “āŠ•āŦāаāŦ‹āЧāŠūāŠĶāŠŋ āŠĪāŠ°āŠĪāŠŪāŦāŠŊāŠĪāŠū, āŠļāŠ°āŦāŠŠāŠūāŠĶāŠŋāŠ•āŠĻāŦ€ āŠŪāŠūāŠ‚āŠŊ; āŠŠāŦ‚āаāŦāŠĩāŠœāŠĻāŦāŠŪ āŠļāŠ‚āŠļāŦāŠ•āŠūāŠ° āŠĪāŦ‡, āŠœāŦ€āŠĩ āŠĻāŠŋāŠĪāŦāŠŊāŠĪāŠū āŠĪāŦāŠŊāŠūāŠ‚āŠŊ.” The emotional intensity such as anger etcetera in Snake and others; displays the Soul’s previous life habits indicating the Soul’s eternal nature.

(7) “āŠ†āŠĪāŦāŠŪāŠū āŠĶāŦāаāŠĩāŦāŠŊāŦ‡ āŠĻāŠŋāŠĪāŦāŠŊ āŠ›āŦ‡, āŠŠāŠ°āŦāŠŊāŠūāŠŊāŦ‡ āŠŠāŠēāŠŸāŠūāŠŊ; āŠŽāŠūāŠģāŠūāŠĶāŠŋ āŠĩāŠŊ āŠĪāŦāаāŠĢāŦāŠŊāŠĻāŦāŠ‚, āŠœāŦāŠžāŠūāŠĻ āŠāŠ•āŠĻāŦ‡ āŠĨāŠūāŠŊ.” The Soul is an eternal matter by nature but it’s passing states (āŠŠāŠ°āŦāŠŊāŠūāŠŊ) change; the Soul is the sole knower of the passing states such as child, adult and old etc.

(8) “āŠ…āŠĨāŠĩāŠū āŠœāŦāŠžāŠūāŠĻ āŠ•āŦāŠ·āŠĢāŠŋāŠ•āŠĻāŦāŠ‚, āŠœāŦ‡ āŠœāŠūāŠĢāŦ€ āŠĩāŠĶāŠĻāŠūāŠ°; āŠĩāŠĶāŠĻāŠūāŠ°āŦ‹ āŠĪāŦ‡ āŠ•āŦāŠ·āŠĢāŠŋāŠ• āŠĻāŠđāŠŋ, āŠ•āŠ° āŠ…āŠĻāŦāŠāŠĩ āŠĻāŠŋāŠ°āŦāЧāŠūāŠ°.” If a speaker knows in first moment and states so in the next moment, the speaker and the knowledge cannot be momentary because the speaker and the knowledge have to exist in the next moment. You can ponder on this to confirm.

(9) “āŠ•āŦāŠŊāŠūāŠ°āŦ‡ āŠ•āŦ‹āЈ āŠĩāŠļāŦāŠĪāŦāŠĻāŦ‹, āŠ•āŦ‡āŠĩāŠģ āŠđāŦ‹āŠŊ āŠĻ āŠĻāŠūāŠķ; āŠšāŦ‡āŠĪāŠĻ āŠŠāŠūāŠŪāŦ‡ āŠĻāŠūāŠķ āŠĪāŦ‹, āŠ•āŦ‡āŠŪāŠūāŠ‚ āŠāŠģāŦ‡ āŠĪāŠŠāŠūāŠļ.” The matter can never be destroyed, if the knower Soul (āŠšāŦ‡āŠĪāŠĻ) is destroyed, check where its knowledge will mix with.

Based on the above discussion, our Soul is an eternal matter that cannot be made or destroyed. This will help us to not fear the Body’s death because the Body dies while our Soul moves on to a new Body. Our re-birth cycles will continue until we get rid of all the Karma attached to the Soul with our Aradhana.

Let us pay gratitude to āŠŠāŠ°āŠŪāŠ•āŦƒāŠŠāŠūāŠģāŦ āŠĶāŦ‡āŠĩ for passing on to us the essence of the Jain Scriptures by way of āŠķāŦāаāŦ€ āŠ†āŠĪāŦāŠŪ-āŠļāŠŋāŠĶāŦāЧāŠŋ āŠķāŠūāŠļāŦāŠĪāŦāа and leaving behind the Aradhana for us to shed all the Karma attached to the Soul.

You can listen to the above discussion from āŠķāŦāаāŦ€ āŠ†āŠĪāŦāŠŪ-āŠļāŠŋāŠĶāŦāЧāŠŋ āŠķāŠūāŠļāŦāŠĪāŦāа by clicking on this link:
