Some long lost relatives showed up on Friday on their way to Corpus, so
we decided to take them to Rudy's. In case you haven't been there, it's
in Leon Springs, outside of 1604 on IH10 West. Take the Leon Springs
Road exit, and it's about 1 mile down the road. Ya can't miss it. It's
adjacent to Macaroni Grill, and across the street from Leon Springs
Dance Hall. I understand there's also a Rudy's in New Braunfels, but I
haven't been there yet.
Rudy's is a rustic barbeque place with picnic tables outside on their
patio, which also houses their furnace. I imagine this would be
advantageous in winter, but when it's already 85 degrees, the last place
I want to sit is next to a furnace! Anyhow, you enter a line where you
order your food. There's a large board containing all the choices. The
first person you encounter will give you your side orders. You can get
them in serving, pint, or quart sizes. (I think there's a larger size,
too, but I'm not sure). Your sides are placed in a large red plastic
grocery-store crate, the kind bread is delivered in. You push your way
down the line and next comes the meat. They have Smoked everything -
turkey breast (they were giving free samples Friday night - yum!),
sausage, brisket, pork, chopped beef, ribs, and chicken. You order by
the pound. This can be deceiving, and we always end up getting much
more than we could possibly eat. Your meat order is laid atop a large
piece of waxed butcher paper and is placed in your crate. Additionally,
you'll receive about 1/2 loaf of white bread. You pay for the contents
of your crate at that time. Then, you can purchase drinks inside, or if
you want one of the beers that are in the troughs you are standing next
to while you wait for your meat order, you pay for those then, too.
I've always contended that Rudy's is the best bbq I've tasted. Of
course, as is traditional Texas BBQ, the "sause" is on the table and you
pour on as much or as little as you want.
There is ample seating inside, where it's air-conditioned. Or, if you
insist on outside seating, there's a nice courtyard in back. The only
problem there is the gnats. They can be a little pesky. As usual, the
meat was tender and delicious. For some reason, though, the sides are
usually cold. Too bad. I really should skip the sides, but they always
look good.
Our relatives were totally charmed by the place, the food, the cold
drinks. They loved eating right off the table (with the butcher paper,
of course!).
Not terribly expensive, but not cheap, either. I believe our total bill
(four people) was about $45.00. Highly recommended!

> I understand there's also a Rudy's in New Braunfels
Absolutely!! It's located at Loop 337 (Texas 46) & Common St.(If you're
coming from I-35 --where are the most of the motels are located in NB--,
Common St. is where you turn off of Loop 337/Texas 46 to go to
Schlitterbahn;
you can't miss the intersection because there's an Exxon station/Tiger Tote
convenience store that's catty corner from Rudy's.)
Whoever posted all this information about Rudy's Bar-B-Q -- Thanks!!! =)
I think I now have better idea about their concept & how they do things.
OBTW, would Rudy's by any chance happen to serve Bar-B-Q Sandwiches?
(Just curious.)

Rudy's has taken a few hits lately for being bought by someone other
than the original owners, but I still enjoy it. BTW, they have a
location near Sea World, kinda on a hill, so the breeze helps blow the
flies away.
The main attraction for me, though, is the "sause." It's a little hot
for some people, but I think they've come out with a milder version. I
can order a quarter pound of turkey, one sausage link, get a bunch of
white bread and sause for free, build two or three super sandwiches, and
be out of there for around $5, unless I stop to drink beer. Which I may
do on the way home tonight!
Thanks, Laura, for the suggestion!

Hello,
Your post reminded me that I was planning a follow-up to our SA BBQ a couple
of weeks ago.
This what happened.... Basically BBQ wars broke out <g>
On Friday night we all got together at a private home (about 15 of us from
the Foodwine list) and BBQ, potato salad, beans, etc. were picked up from
Casey's.
On Saturday night we went to the above-mentioned Rudy's and had sausage,
ribs, creamed corn (I wonder how they do that?), and beans. Laura's right
about the portions... we brought A LOT back to Houston.
I think our friend from St. Louis got his Texas BBQ wish fulfilled!
All in all a very fun time was had and also had time to enjoy a couple of
the Fiesta events going on.
