I’ve been using my blackberry for the last 2 years for GPS. I’m using
software named Toposports and with it, I can download topo maps for
any area of Canada and USA. I am also using softwares from Blackberry
called Maps and Google Maps for Highway/road navigation but with those
two you need cell coverage to download maps as you go. Lately I’ve
been researching GPS, looking for something more powerful. I’m
looking at the Etrex 20 with the Canadian topo Maps from Garmin
mapsource.

I like to ride the grid roads and when I go fishing up north, I like
to be able to find a way to remote lakes but many of these small
trails are hard to find so I’m hoping that mapsource has great maps
that shows the location of the small trails. Also, I want to do parts
of the TCAT this summer and I need to load the track, (can’t load any
track using Toposports).

Is the Etrex 20 a good choice? Should I look at something else? What
are you guys using? Any good place to buy a GPS in Saskatoon or should
I buy it online? (GPScental.ca and GPScity.ca) Thanks Eric

Hey BordenBMW, I've been a GPS junkie (I have about 6 or 7 of them)
for years now, and I would agree with the Garmin 60CSx comment. I
don't have one of those, but I know guys who do, and my Rino 520 is
almost exactly the same thing but with a GMRS radio built in. The
Garmins are good units - my Rino has fallen off my bike and been run
over (by Stan on his Funduro 650) and still works like a charm. The
map data on them is excellent if you are looking at gravel roads or
dirt roads, but there are very few GPS models that have good trail
maps. Also, beware that the road data is good, not perfect. There
are a few mistakes.

Being the TCAT Prairie Province guy, I plan to ride with Ted from the
Manitoba/Ontario border right to Radium BC this August (my whole
section). About 4400 km in 11 days plus technical options - it'll be
epic! (Can't imagine how epic the entire TCAT would be if just the
prairies are epic on their own!) Wish I could continue on to the
Island, but having little kids means 11 days on the road will be long
enough away from the family. I CAN'T WAIT!!! Arrrrgh - friggin snow
and winter...

+1 on the 60CSx. I've had mine for years and its been very reliable.
The battery contacts broke off sometime last year but I've got it
wired to the 990 now and its still works well enough.
If I see a good deal on the 62s It'd be nice to get one to replace it.
Wholesale Sports and the Fishin' Hole typically have them in stock.

Thanks, I will definitely take a good look at the Garmin GPSmaps 62
series. I’m sure there’s lots of info online I can read/view.

Chris,

If you could keep us up to date, that would be great. I really want to
do part of the TCAT this year. I was thinking from Swan River/Hudson
bay area all the way down to the south west of the province; maybe all
the way to Drumheller or Banff if the time permits, Eric

You will love the TCAT - especially that portion! The forest roads of
Northeastern Sask to the rolling prairies of the Southwest. It'll be
a great ride. And if you come all the way to Radium you'll get 900 km
of mountain views to top it all off. The ride from Cypress to Calgary
is fun too - lots of twisty grass, dirt, and gravel canal roads and a
ton of wide open spaces. I've ridden that route several times, and I
always feel really alive when I'm out there in the middle of nowhere.

There may be quite a few people interested in this ride. It gets
difficult to maintain a group once you get over about 6 or 7 people.
If this ride gets too big I will distribute route information to a few
others and we can split the group into two smaller groups that just
meet up from time to time and at the end of each day.

If you have a GPSMap 62 by then I could supply you with the route
too. Even if we're riding together it's nice to have the route in
front of you so you're not totally relying on the other guy to show
you where to go.

Yes I had forgotten about the tread marks on your Garmin, sorry about
that, old age slow reaction time you know.
The August trip sounds like it will be a good one and I am going to
definetly try to get part or all of it in, too far away right now to
say for sure.
Have there been any dates picked yet?
I am liking my 60CSX so far, it has way more capability than I have
mastered on it yet though. The one thing that would improve it for me
is if the trails would show up at a larger scale. As you zoom out you
loose all the smaller trails. You need to be at a 300 meter scale for
all the trails to show up.

Snobear, there might be a setting in the 60CSx for something like
"detail level" (I can't remember off the top of my head exactly what
it's called). Go into the map screen and pull up the menu and look
for something like this. The settings in the Garmin should go from
"least" to "most". Make sure it's on "Most".

On my Rino I lose all the gravel roads at 1.2 km zoom. I do wish that
you could keep them when zooming out further too, though. I know what
you mean.

Looking at the GPSmaps 62 and 62s, about $100 difference. Internal
memory for both is 1.7G, so do I need a SD card slot?

62
GPSMAP 62 High-sensitivity WAAS-enabled GPS receiver with HotFix, 2.6”
color display, 1.7GB internal memory, worldwide basemap with shaded
relief, supports paperless geocaching

62s
GPSMAP 62s High-sensitivity WAAS-enabled GPS receiver with HotFix,
2.6” color display, 1.7GB internal memory and microSD™ card slot,
worldwide basemap with shaded relief, supports paperless geocaching,
barometric altimeter, 3-axis electronic compass, wireless data sharing

I would hate to buy something just to realise a few month down the
road that I should have bought the next one up. Is the worldwide
basemap good enought or do I need to buy the Canadian Topo Maps? Can
they be downloaded free from the net?

buy one... than you know what you should have bought", thanks

I still don”t know if I need the SD card upgrade but just in case I
need it in the future I decided not to buy the 62. What I’m looking
for is the 62s with topo combo or the 62st that comes with the topo
already loaded. Maybe Cabela’s will have some good deals when they
open their new store this spring. The best deal I could find is at GPS
central.ca for a 62s with Topo Maps for $449.95. Anybody ordered from
those guys in the past, thanks?

Thanks SnoBear, that’s good to know. I will be checking for deal
during the next few months. If I see a better deal I’ll buy it, if not
I’ll order it online in the spring. Still hoping for some good sale
when Cabela’s opens in a few months…”opening door special maybe.”

If anyone see a better deal, please post it on this forum or shoot me
an e-mail, thanks

On my way back from work this morning (shift worker) I saw a new sign
at Cabela's.... opening day May 10th, great!

I'm interested to see what kind of deals Cabela's has too when they
open. I've bought a lot of stuff from GPS Central - when I lived in
Calgary I'd just drive over there to pick it up. They are quite
knowledgable on GPS stuff, and I've always had excellent service from
them. Their prices are usually on the low end of what I can find too.

You will definitely want the topo maps or City Navigator North
America. The basemap is almost useless - no city streets and only the
most major Sask highways. At least that's how it used to be - maybe
they've upgraded the base map in the last few years.

The compass and barametric altimeter on the 62st are nice, but that's
really what you're paying the extra hundred for. I'd get the st
version myself, but it's a matter of preference. Nowadays you can
load satellite imagery into the Garmins, so if you start doing that
it'll require tons of memory. Then you'll be glad you have the st.
However, if you don't figure you want to use satellite imagery then
the 1.7 GB is probably lots.
