spring is on its way and i've began tinkering and am wondering if
anyone here has any experience with the 22 cent mod for the klr. i'm
thinking it might help with my idle and popping on decel. not that
these are huge issues on my bike but from what i've been reading this
particular mod might help. but, being an amateurish mechanic at best,
i am apprehensive about drilling that hole in the carb. any thoughts?

Go for it, it makes a hugh improvement, more power bottom end, open the air box as well, & don't for get the exhaust mod. Cheers

I did notice a bit of a difference in power - it's got a little more
ooomph down low. Definitely worth the 22 cents it costs!

Drilling out the fuel screw plug and setting the fuel screw properly
is the first step to reducing the popping. The rest of the 22 cent
mod is just to get a bit more power, I think. If the fuel screw
doesn't completely get rid of the popping a one-size richer pilot jet
should do it.

Oh, and don't worry too much about drilling the carb. Just make sure
you don't go any bigger than the size they give you (7/64") or it can
apparently cause problems. I'm sure they'll have a 7/64" bit at the
shop, but if not you'll have to either go buy one or come borrow mine.

Here's the original link on the KLR650.net site:
http://www.klr650.net/forums/showthread.php?t=41112, but you need a
user account to view this. Of course, if you have a KLR you should
definitely have a user account.

Basically it involves shimming up the needle with a small (#4) washer,
drilling out the hole in the carb slide, and opening the airbox.
Also, you drill out the plug in front of the fuel screw and open it up
a bit to make the bike just a hair richer off the bottom. The
shimming opens up the needle jet a little, opening the airbox allows
more airflow through the motor, and drilling out the hole in the slide
helps increase throttle response by allowing the vacuum to build in
the carb faster to lift the slide.

As for drilling the hole, there is a hole there to begin with, so it's
not too difficult. You're just making it bigger.

Skip the 22cent mod, get a klx needle. The stock needle is way to
rich at WOT.

Do you mean the stock needle is way too lean?

If you shim up the stock needle it will make it richer, which fixes
one issue with the KLR from factory. However, the shape of the needle
is what dictates the fuel flow at various throttle positions, and the
KLX had a slightly different shaped needle. I'm not sure exactly what
the shape difference is between the two, but a lot of guys swear by
the KLX needle.
