Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions: The International Movement for Justice in Palestine
Wednesday, May 25th
7pm, Savery 264

Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) is a global movement to pressure the state of Israel to meet its obligations under international law to respect the rights of Palestinians.  Palestinian land is currently occupied and under siege by Israel, denying hundreds of thousands of Palestinians basic rights, such as housing, food security, and freedom of movement.  BDS campaigns were successfully used in the past to place international pressure on human rights violators, such as the South African apartheid state in the 1980s.  Today, Palestinians and solidarity activists around the world have called for a BDS campaign against Israel, in hopes of bringing an end to the human rights violations being perpetrated against them.

Want to learn more about this international movement?  What can we do at the University of Washington on behalf of the BDS campaign?

Please join us for the premier of a short documentary of the BDS movement at UC Berkeley last spring, titled "Full Court Press."  The film will be introduced by the director, and followed by a panel of academics, UW students, and activists who have direct experience in Palestine and with the BDS campaign.

The panel includes:

·      Emma Klein (Jewish Voices for Peace)

·      Anna-Marie Murano (Evergreen Colleges BDS Campaign)

·      Jehad Affoneh (Palestinian and UW Student)

·      Ron Smith (UW Geography Department)

The global BDS movement urges various forms of boycotts against Israel until it meets its obligations under international law by:

1.     Ending the Occupation and dismantling the Wall.

2.     Recognizing Palestinian-Israelis rights to full equality; and

3.     Respecting, protecting and promoting the Palestinian refugees right of return.
