Revoke Toxic Incinerator’s Permit

WHAT: Local group, Stop Toxic Incineration in Springfield (STIS), will
convene on the steps of City Hall to encourage Springfield City
Councilors to stop the proposed toxic incinerator by revoking the
company’s permit. The community group has been going door-to-door in
Springfield neighborhoods to educate local residents about the issue.
They are gathering petitions calling on the City Council to revoke the
Special Permit granted two years ago to build a construction and
demolition waste incinerator and asking the City to hold a public
hearing on the grounds for revocation.

WHO: John Lysak, Springfield City Councilor
John Miller, Member of Stop Toxic Incineration in Springfield
Betty Agin, Health Disparities Project
Megan Jenny, Western Massachusetts Organizer for Toxics Action Center
Jesse Lederman, President of McKnight Youth Council

WHEN: Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at 11AM

WHERE: Front steps of Springfield City Hall, 36 Court Street
Springfield, MA 0110

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY: Dozens of Pioneer Valley residents will be holding
posters on the steps of City Hall. There will also be a large banner,
a big box of postcard petitions, and a three-foot asthma inhaler.

Stop Toxic Incineration in Springfield is a truly grassroots, non-
profit, group of volunteers who organized to fight the proposed
construction and demolition waste incinerator in Springfield. STIS
opposes the incinerator on the grounds that it is unhealthy for the
region, has negatives outweighing any positives, did not receive
appropriate publicity and public input, and negatively impacts the
property value of local residents.
Toxics Action Center is a public health and environmental nonprofit
that works with communities to clean up and prevent pollution in
neighborhoods.
