About Gavin Williams:
Gavin Williams is a Fellow of St Peter's College, Oxford and a University
Lecturer in Politics at the University of Oxford. He is interested in
political and social theories and in the empirical studies of politics,
societies and histories. He is now engaged in studying the histories of the
wine industry in South Africa. Gavin has been taught at Oxford since 1975
and retires in 2010. Gavin was a founder editor of the Review of African
Political Economy and an editor of the Journal of Historical Sociology from
its second year, contributing significantly to success of both journals. For
the last six years he has been an editor of the Oxford Magazine, which
provides a forum for independent opinion within Oxford University.
Politically, he is a socialist, committed to free enquiry, to the rule of
law, and to social co-operation and democratic practice within institutions
and in society. His active politics began in opposing apartheid at the
University of Stellenbosch and in national student politics.
All welcome.
