Martin Carthy has been at it a long time! Our own Mr. Dylan mentions him,
by name as the source of the melody for "Bob Dylan's Dream", no less,
if you want an American reference and a credential. He has collected,
arraigned, sung and played at least as many songs as the famous Harvard
folklorist, Francis Childs... probably more since Childs, to our knowledge,
did not sing, play or arrange anything. Not only that, he has been an
important influence on a great many of the world's steel string guitarists.
Carthy's guitar is strongly modal, contrapuntal, impeccable and interesting.
In addition to being a soloist, his playing has been featured in various
incarnations of Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention and in such amazing
ensembles as Mrs. Ackyroid's Big Band..
If none of the above is sufficient motivation for your attendance, besides
being an enduring advocate of traditional English song Mr. Carthy is a patron
of the cream of contemporary songwriters so you will also hear something you
have never heard before, guaranteed!
Please treat yourself to a wonderful musical event and bring a friend.
