"Fewer planes, more life!" That's what people in Barcelona, Madrid and Palma were calling for last weekend. This time, we want to share this story of one of the biggest recent protests against airport expansions with you. We also look back at events and actions that took place this summer and bring you important news on struggles against aviation growth and for climate justice.

Tens of thousands protest against airport expansions in Catalonia, Spain

Protest. On 19 September, numerous initiatives in Catalonia and Spain called for demonstrations against the expansion of airports. The protest was especially massive in Barcelona, where, according to organisers, about 90,000 people from all over Catalonia gathered. There were also demonstrations in Madrid and Palma de Mallorca. The message was clear: fewer planes, more life. People are fighting for the climate, health and life - all of which are incompatible with bigger airports and more flights. Instead, we need a different mobility and an economic system that is oriented towards the needs of people and the limits of the planet. As Stay Grounded, we spoke out against airport expansions in Barcelona and Madrid in July.

Reports on the demonstrations (in Catalan and Spanish) have been collected by our member Zeroport. To learn more, read this report in English by Catalan News including a video explaining the background of the protests.

Information. Frequent flyer programmes (FFPs) incentivise climate destruction, we have to end them! We researched how FFPs have contributed to the airline industry’s growth and the harms it causes – and how all of us are subsidising them. Read our in-depth article.

Webinar. Stay Grounded participated in the Week for Climate Justice in Latin America and the Caribbean. About 40 organisations from Haiti, Paraguay, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, Chile, Honduras, Argentina and Peru participated. Stay Grounded contributed to Forum on a just transition for aviation and tourism which can be re-watched on Facebook (Spanish).

Activists block Leipzig Halle Cargo Airport in protest against planned expansion

Action. In July 2021, more than 50 climate activists blocked an access road to the DHL hub at Leipzig Airport and disrupted its operations to protest against the expansion of the cargo airport. The police reacted with heavy repression and false allegations against the activists. Read our after-action report.
