How do you add a love story in an action comedy film without deviating the theme and wasting much screen time on it? Doing this can be extremely easy by adding a typical love song after love at first sight between the two central characters but what is difficult is to make it meaningful, impactful, and deep. The perfect example of a superbly done love story via a song is Tere liye from Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota. This post is open for all and it is spoiler free. Feel free to watch the video and go ahead even if you have not seen the movie, heard the song, or have no idea about either whatsoever. I am sure you would enjoy it. Here is the link-

Well, you should have a little idea about the situation before you go to the song analysis in order to understand it better. The song is from the movie Mard ko Dard Nahi Hota. The story is about a boy who can literally feel no pain because of a rare medical condition. As a result, he goes on fighting, injuring, and doing things which would rather cause pain if the condition was not there. A constant companion in his childhood was a girl called Supri who would always be by his side and fight off bullies with him. Due to some incident in the childhood, Surya ( the protagonist) and his family are bullied to leave the society. Their childhood connection is put to a halt until they meet each other in hospital. The song follows the first meeting and the realization that they are the estranged friends of childhood. Note- the song is a perfect duet. The male and the female parts of the song pose opposite views. The female part is full of despair and hopelessness while the male is optimistic and hopeful. It is opposing yet complementing. Please note that the underlined lyrics are by male and the not underlined ones are sung by female.

You can also listen to the podcast version of it while you read it.

The song starts with a tone wherein the girl looks at him and it strikes him that he is the childhood love of hers. She is shocked, puzzled, and confused because she has moved on in her life but this revival of the childhood pulls her back to reality.

This is the perfect example of how Surya approaches her and he realizes that she is his childhood love. He approaches her but she backs off. See how the line Tuney fera chihra
Tere pair peechhey aye, Chall diye is both literal and metaphorical. She goes back literally and remembers all the memories. She also backs off from him and goes away.

He calmly and reaffirmingly says that she is still the same for her and each childhood memory of her is preserved and stored like a priceless gem. He also says that I am ready with everything that you love just like how you would love your toy forever. You would always have a special place in my life.

He says that slowly the world has become lonely. She replies that her situation is the same and her journey is full of disappointment. This is when the male tone shows some sign of disappointment and hopelessness. It is not a perfect idea wherein he would not lose hope and always be a superhero who never gets tired. His exhaustion is prominent when he sees that she is not inclined to come to him. Also note how gentle, understanding, and pure the lines are. They are not coaxing her to be his and forget the world. When he tries to convince and she is not convinced, he lets her go. He gives the freedom to go and come without any hard feelings for her.

The same stanza is repeated but the visuals change. See how when the male sings haath mera pakad, the focus is on the drawing of hers which shows both of them holding hands. Also note how she has that faint smile and glimmer of hope when she is sitting on the balcony holding the sketch. This is powerful symbolism. She is hopeless and sad but she has not given up. She is holding on to what gives her strength and hope. She is wanting a gateway to utopia but the reality pulls her back. Exactly when she moves to the dining table, the line Khauya mera haath hey comes.

Again, we see him trying to convince and the tift between them is quite evident. Supri walks away and he is left alone. He tries to convince her to fight back and save herself but somehow, she is unable to do so. She walks away and he agrees to her decision. The next day, we see he and karate man gone to retrieve the chain and he sends her a message about not to worry about him or the karate master. Here, notice how his goal becomes what once her worry and goal was. He also lets her go and follow what she wants to. He knows that she would have thought well about it and he also assures that he would take care of the matter.

And exactly he reaffirms what I mentioned above. He would go on and carry out her goal. He would be relentless and restless unless he gets what she wants. He would also make sure that he will keep on waiting for her no matter. He would always welcome her with open arms whenever she wishes to come. Also see how the love story is based on understanding and companionship. He understands her point of view and is supportive in that. She is okay with him accomplishing her goal. She finally then gives up her idea of marrying the guy and joins him in the journey that always wanted to do.

The song is about love and about despair. The song does not have heartbreaking lyrics or heart-wrenching tunes. It is soft, soothing, and hopeful. It gives two perspectives. Usually, heartbreak songs are one sided and they often convey a singular perspective. Here, there is a heartbreak but no one is to be blamed. It is situation and there is a hope of reconciliation. The brilliance of this song lies in the fact that it conveys such a large amount of details and gives a brief tone of melancholy and sadness but in a soothing, seemless, and a jerkfree way in such a joyride film like Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota.

@sassyfrombirth I guess it is more about realizing that the love they had in childhood is much different from what they have now. It is also true that the other song- O nakhrewali is about love but that is like a one sided thought process of him.

Oh my God!!!!! This is the best interpretation I have read. This song is so underrated that very people know about it. And me being the person who always looks for the lyrics of the song, this turns to be perfect
