Pulmonary Fibrosis is an end result. Much like a scar on your hand is the end result of a kitchen accident with a paring knife, burning on the stove or tearing your skin on a nail while remodeling said kitchen. PF has many causes.
Pulmonary fibrosis can be caused by many conditions including chronic inflammatory processes like sarcoidosis and Wegener's granulomatosis , infections, BREATHING environmental agents like asbestos, silica or BREATHING in certain gases, exposure to ionizing radiation (such as radiation therapy to treat tumors of the chest), chronic conditions like lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, and certain medications.
In a condition known as hypersensitivity pneumonitis, fibrosis of the lung can develop due to BREATHING organic dusts or occupational chemicals. This condition most often results from BREATHING dust contaminated with bacterial, fungal, or animal products.
In some people fibrosis develops without an identifiable cause. Most of these people have a condition called idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
My husband has Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.
FACT #3 PF can be caused by several different things but mostly it develops due to BREATHING something your body doesn't like and reacts to differently than other people. It is not known why only a few react to breathing this way.
