Dear Sir,

This is to draw your kind attention to the fact that the students of National Institute Of Technology, Durgapur have expressed an interest in establishing a formal body , SARC (Student Alumni Relations Cell), to be formed in order to cultivate a greater interaction between the students and the alumni.

The body will be the chief mediator in most communication between the students and the alumni. It will foster an environment of mutual awareness and assistance, and on the whole, serve as a network for disseminating and acquiring information.

We would like to form this body under the Kolkata Chapter of NITDAA, and are ready to abide by all the rules and regulations laid thereof. We would be extremely grateful if you kindly consider our proposal.

Dear Sir,

This is to clarify a the placement situation. What I meant was:
Placement is similar in both core and non-core
a.       Core streams (ME / EE / Civil / Chem / Met) have a handful of high profile companies, including PSU's. However, as their batch strength is very large, their overall placement status is not drastically better.

b.      Non core streams have moderate placements in the sense that only Microsoft offers a package in excess of 7lpa(wrt last year). Even though, there are a substantial number of companies, big names are conspicuously missing.

c.      The attendance of financial firms in the placement procedure is dismal, and this applies to all branches.

I am attaching a list of alumni contacts we retrieved from the NITDAA site.
It contains contacts corresponding to all three of the aforementioned points.
Kindly go through it.

Thanks,
Rahul Shome,

The

Thanks for calling me regarding support on campus hiring. Here's what I
understood from our conversation:

a.       Core streams (ME / EE / Civil / Chem / Met) are being placed
reasonably well (if the others don't agree with this observation, please let
me know).

b.      Non core streams do not have enough placement and therefore need
support.

Here are the AI's:

SARC will immediately -

a.       Send out the list of companies that, SARC believes, will be
interested in hiring grads from the institute (limit to 5 in 1st list and 5
more in 2nd list)

b.      Send out the list of alumni currently placed in these companies (as
available from the NITDAA web site database)

c.       Create a document that profiles the institute, streams and batch
sizes (a brochure that can be shared with the target companies)

d.      Identify 2 dates (in August, on weekends) where alumni can visit to
conduct a workshop on interviewing skills

The NITDAA campus hiring coordination team (led by Aditya) will, upon
receipt of all the above:

a.       Start communicating with these alumni to impress upon their
recruitment teams to visit the institute

b.      Check with Simanta Ray Choudhuri and Thomas Mookken on their
availability to conduct the workshop on interviewing

By October, 2011, I will expect SARC to complete the process of digitizing
the alumni database and hand over to the alumni association. My expectation
is that it will contain information on all batches graduated between 2005
and 2011. Let's make this collaboration worth each other's time and effort.

Guys - I'd like to see gathering of 1000 alumni in the campus on the 14th
and 15th January, 2012. Please do what you have to do to make this happen.

Oops - just realized that the event is for the prior week - i.e. 7th and 8th
Jan. Currently it is slated for just for Sunday - we need to explore if it
can be the weekend - i.e. Sat & Sun.

Thanks

Ashish

Subject: RE: Proposal for foundation of Student-Alumni Relations Cell
(SARC), NIT Durgapur

Dear members of Student Alumni Relations Cell (SARC)

Thank you for your initiative in proposing a SARC. This has the makings of a
game-changer if we all put our minds to it.

For some time, many of us have been feeling a disconnect between the current
students and alumni. Some areas of opportunity for student-alumni
interaction are:

a.       Enhancing the placement as well as internship program - so we have
more organizations coming in. My personal opinion on this subject is that we
seem to focus all our energies on getting mass recruiters. I believe we
should also work towards getting other organizations that may need fewer
numbers but provide rich working experience.

b.      Making the alumni web site the de-facto mode of interaction for all.
A quick look at the web site will show that the last major update happened
in Feb. We need to work on posting more frequently on the site, especially
the forums. Some sections may need to be re-organized, as required.

c.       Building a comprehensive database of all alumni. We have multiple
disorganized sources of alumni data (i) folks registering at the web site
have posted minimal information, that needs to be more comprehensive (b) we
have various chapters whose member data has not been captured into the
central database and ***(iii)*** the institute TP&SW itself is sitting on a
pile of alumni data that needs to be uploaded into the central database.
This can be a significant "force multiplier".

d.      Renewing our lecture series - "Beyond the walls" - where we bring in
notable alumnus to address the students. This one has been an "on and off"
event - the ones that took place were received very enthusiastically, but
thereafter fizzled out due to lack of coordination between the students and
the alumni. If revived, this will provide insights on both sides.

e.      Making our scholarships more visible to all - also providing inputs
to make the scholarship attractive. Our current "merit cum means"
scholarship had almost no takers - none of the candidates qualified this
year. Our RCA shows that this is due to (a) poor awareness about the
scholarship (b) low amount and (c) outdated selection criteria. This one has
to be worked on with inputs from all.

f.        Transforming the annual global meet / reunion, so it is completely
held in the institute and front-ended by the students. We have been
conducting our global meet every year in the second Sunday of January - so
this is a firm non-moving date. However, attendance has been sparse - partly
because (a) we have not been able to reach out to most alumni early enough
for them to plan to be there for the event (b) the event + format itself is
possibly not attractive enough (c) there is hardly any student interaction -
we don't hear or get the feel the you guys want us in the campus / look
forward to interacting with us.

In Jan 2012, we will be felicitating three batches, viz. (a) the golden
jubilee batch - that graduated 50 years back (b) the silver jubilee batch of
'86 that graduated 25 years back and (c) the crystal jubilee batch of '01
that graduated 10 years back. We should work to make everyone look forward
to their visit to the institute.

Each of these batches brings huge value to you all. The first batch has
"been there, done that" and can offer lessons from life. The sliver jubilee
batch has lots of practising senior leaders. The crystal batch has subject
matter experts. So, size this opportunity to bond with them - for they can
transform the next stages of your life.

We know that you all do a fabulous job of organizing your various fests. So,
how about putting some of your CPU cycles not making the global meet a
resounding success? It is my firm belief that this single exercise will
transform the student - alumni relationship to a higher level of engagement.

Guys - I'd like to see gathering of 1000 alumni in the campus on the 14th
and 15th January, 2012. Please do what you have to do to make this happen.

As some first steps, I am co-opting some additional folks into this
conversation (in addition to Aditya). They are:

a.       Jaya Sood, based in Delhi. She will be your mentor / coach and
represent you in the apex committee.

b.      Shyam Varma, based in Allahabad. He will work with you on the global
meet transformation.

c.       Aditya Dogra, based in Bangalore will continue to work with you on
placement + internship.

d.      Thomas Mookken, based in Bangalore is our messaging guru - he will
work with you on messaging (including all web site related matters).

I suggest that these three additional names (along with Aditya and myself)
also be included into the sarc-nitd alias, so that we don't miss anyone out
while communicating.

We also need to share a spreadsheet with contact details. Please collate all
the names, email id's and phone numbers so we can get going.

My contact details are included in the signature. Please do not hesitate to
call me between 7PM - 10PM any day, if you have questions / queries /
suggestions.
