HI Fellas,
          I am Aditya Dogra, 2007 passout from NIT,Durgapur with Information technology as major. I am working in Cisco systems from past four years. Before joining Cisco systems , I was placed from campus in a company named 'FCG' which got merged with CSC and due to the merger and conflicts never gave me any joining letter. So I came to bangalore and learned certain tricks of the trade and after getting 21 rejects from some of the big MNC's like Nokia, intel, Fair Isaac , got into Cisco. During this period of rejection , i learned some basic facts and most important was Resume Writing. I am not saying I am the best person for this but you can learn from my mistakes and ameliorate your resume skills.

Resume : It is your way of telling who you are and why should company hire you.

Don't :
Company doesn't hire you because you are 6 feet tall or because you are slim trim,

Neither is company looking for some very good looking people (until you are a lady with very fair complexion and beautiful look, so that they can hire you for sales and marketing : sorry for being blunt on my words )  so no need to putting a pic .

Nationality is not an issue unless you are applying for overseas options or you belong to some other country . So indian students need not mention this field.

Eye sight , thats crap , unless you are applying for INDIAN ARMY or NAVY or AIRFORCE.

FATHER/MOTHER's name is not required as they are hiring you , not your family  or by looking at your resume  they are not some horoscope company who is going to predict your future by looking at your father/Mother's name, dob or time of birth. If you want they put it under permanent address field : Say 

Permanent address

XYZ
S/O or D/O Sh/Mr ABC    ===> Always use Sh or Mr with your parents name , give them some respect.

NO need to put marks in semester basis or separating CGPA or SGPA.  Give cumulative scores .

DO :

Resume should be something like of this format : Please dont take this as some standard

OBJECTIVE : which speaks about your future visions, strategy and execution plans . But it should not be more than 2 lines .

Special Interests or Skill set : Write 3 core subjects with which you are most familiar with . Don't try to fool the companies by writing according to their work. For eg : Anyone applying in Cisco, if you are good in networking then only write it else dont fool it . Anyways they are gonna ask you Networks so if you write networks as in the special interest , they expect 100% answers and if you have not written it in your special interests , then 70-80% answers in networks might help you in winning the game . Reason is companies believe that what your have written as special interest you should be well versed of it.


Projects undertaken :
Title of the project : One liner
Tools used : including programming language and tools if used like matlab , verilog , some simulator
Role in the project : This is infact most important field in the resume which shows what was your role in the project.Sometimes roles are completely different from the topic of the project .

Just an example : my summer project looks like this :

Real time data logger and interpreter on embedded platform.  ( May 2006- August 2006)

Programming Language & Tools: C, Keil UVision

Description: ADC7705(ADC), DS1307(Real Time Clock), AT24C04(EEPROM) are connected to self programmed micro controller for collection and analyzing the data.

Role: Implemented the Serial interface protocols I2C(Inter-Integrated Circuit) and SPI(Serial Peripheral Interface) for the timer and memory devices to communicate with the micro controller.

Here the role shows that I am interested in networking , whether its inter-processor or inter device networking but on the overall project is on embedded system . So the role can completely change the perception of the HR .


 
Academic Qualifications :

Accomplishments :
IEEE or other papers published
National Olympiads/ NTCS / National Level Scholarships(given to you on the basis of intelligence , not on financial conditions). 
<Accomplishments should also show your overall growth , like it should have some thing to show leadership quality like Leading aarohan/ mukti etc.
                                         also show your zeal to grow more in various domains like participated in this quiz, game fest etc>

Hobbies
Mention two hobbies but please do understand the fact that you should be prepared for giving 10 minutes non stop talk on hobby , why you have chosen it and how it can help the organization , how it differs you from others, whats soo special about this hobby .

NO DECLARATION IS NORMALLY REQUIRED .

REMEMBER : Resume should not be more than 1.5 pages.

Now taking care of the above tips , make your own resumes. You all are born aboriginal, so why copying from others.
