The Parshah in a Nutshell
Bereishis
Bereishis 1:1–6:8
Parshat Bereishit describes God's six-day creation of the universe: Day 1: God created light and darkness. Day 2: The heaven (rakia) dividing between the upper and lower waters. Day 3: Dry land and plant life. Day 4: The heavenly bodies. Day 5: Aquatic life and birds. Day 6: Animals and man. Day 7: God rested and sanctified the seventh day as Shabbat.
The Torah then describes how God created Adam in more detail: forming him out of mud while breathing into him a spirit of life.
God then planted the trees of the Garden of Eden, placing man there, and instructing him not to eat of the Tree of Knowledge. God brought before Adam the animals, which he named.
Seeing that only Adam had no mate. God put Adam to sleep, and took a part of him which He built into Eve. Both were unclothed as they had no evil inclination to corrupt or tempt them.
The Serpent persuaded Eve to eat of the Tree of Knowledge, and she gave of it to Adam as well. Next, Adam and Eve heard God's voice approaching and attempted to hide from him, claiming they were ashamed of their nakedness. God accused them of eating from the Tree - or how would nakedness embarrass them? In consequence, God punished the Serpent, Eve and Adam, and banished them from the Garden, to a life of toil; but also showed His attribute of mercy by clothing them.
The parsha continues with the births of Cain and Abel. Cain became a farmer while Abel herded livestock. Both brought an offering to God; only Abel's was accepted. Cain's resultant anger led him to kill his brother. God punished Cain, making him a wanderer, but granted him a sign so that none would hurt him.
The Torah continues with the birth of Adam's sons, including Seth, the ancestor of the Jewish people. The parsha concludes by describing the ten generations from Adam till Noah.
