Hi!

Here are some of my favorite pieces written since the last installment of the newsletter. I had a great 2012, writing-wise, and can't wait for 2013!

Fiction:

I graduated from VCFA in June, ending a really wonderful two year-long journey.

Empty Nest, my first story from my thesis/collection-in-progress got published in Joyland magazine (hooray!). It involves “smart people falling apart” in the words of my editor there.

I'm happy to say I just received a small grant from the Hadassah-Brandeis institute to help me carve out some time to finish my collection.

Arts writing:

I Was a Model in a Regency Jane Austen Fashion Show at the Hairpin. Self-explanatory title. ;)

An epistolary review of JK Rowling's The Casual Vacancy with my VCFA roommate and foil Sarah Braud at Hunger Mountain literary magazine.
At Women's eNews, I profiled the Ladydrawers, an extremely cool collective of comics creators who are taking on their own industry through art.

A considered essay on 50 Shades of Grey of which I'm quite proud.

Activism:

At the end of the year, I interviewed three international human rights superstars. In the fall, I profiled six "badass" activists to watch, with a focus on women on the margins. Last spring, I covered the first "Feminist General Assembly" for The Nation.

And I interviewed a friend whose apartment was raided by the NYPD in a pre-emptive and silly strike against Occupy.

Feminism:

I summed up all my favorite feminist posts at the Sisterhood at year's end.

Some of my gender/reproductive rights roundups at AlterNet got picked up by Salon, like this one, on GOP rape comments, and this one, on the continuing state-level War on Women post 2012 election.

Sexy Halloween costumes:

A category all its own. :)

Thanks for reading, everyone, and best wishes for the year ahead.

Sarah
