If I can find a cheaper flight, I would like to attend in person at the Eastern Conference, which would be incredible if I can! Actually I have found a flight which, if I grab it quickly, will cost me £500 which seems very cheap to come all the way over there.

However, its a long way to come on my own just to come home 5 days later.

Anyone got any thoughts on what I can do if I stay for anything up to another week?

Looks like flights go from Heathrow to Washington and then I would need to drive over some mountains to get to the observatory. Apologies for my lack of any local knowledge about USA as I have never been there before.

Andy

You could always stay longer at Green Bank and use the 40' telescope to conduct observations.  Snowshoe mountain is just 30 minutes away for bike riding, hiking, swimming in the lake, etc..

Or you have the big things, drive back over to Washington DC and see the capital.  Not so big things, drive north out of Greenbank about 3 hours and you will be in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, I don't know the city very well but there is a lot to do. It isn't Washington DC but it has the big city events that you can participate in. Washington DC has the "things" to see though, the museums, etc..

If you decide to come in person, I can help with ideas ... let me know what you decide.

If I stayed longer at Green Bank could I stay for extra week? Would it be easy to learn how to use 40m telescope as I have never used it before, although I have used 20m quite a bit?

If you flew into Baltimore-Washington International I could pick you up and we could drive to Green Bank together.

In terms of things to do after/before the conference, exploring DC is always fun. Or, take the train to New York and see those sights. NYC is expensive but lots to see and do.

If you want to spend a day admiring classic steam locomotives, Cass Scenic Railroad is just up the road and a beautiful example of the 1920 logging railroad era equipment and buildings. By the mid‑1910s, the Cass logging railroad extended 80 miles. It's a great place to visit.

I just spoke with Greenbank and you could rent one of the dorm rooms for longer than our conference, it is available after our conference.

40' is fairly easy to learn, I am not an expert but during the conference we are having training on the 40' and Skip Crilly (the trainer) will be in person during the conference and is always extremely helpful in making sure everyone that wants to learn does. Plus he is around to help as well and he is just full of wisdom and great stories.

When  I was planning  my first  visit  to  UK  I was advised  to not  try  to drive  in UK.. they  drive  on the wrong side of  the  road!!  I am  extending  this  warning  to  Andrew .. you  probably  don't want to  rent a car  and try  driving here in USA.  I am not  sure  which side of the road  is the  correct  side.

Here in the UK we drive on the correct side of the road, have a King, use better currency, drink real warm British beer, play snooker rather than pool, have proper round-shaped balls rather than pointy things, and speak with a good accent. But apart from that, we are exactly the same as USA!
