I am trying to capture both the H-Line and Hydroxyl radical simultaneously. Has anyone had any luck with either a dual feed dish or capturing Hydroxyl radical data?

Thank you
Jeff

WOW I just research hydroxyl radical and found it to be an amazing ion. I can see why you want to map them together. I am thinking with that info you can tell the capacity this short lived ion that cleans our upper atmosphere and how it may relate to the amount of methane we are putting into the atmosphere to kind of strike a balance. There maybe more than one way to skin a cat. Thanks for the curiosity in your post, I learned something today. Lol

Hi Jeff,
If you search this group for the keyword "OH Maser" you will find plenty of posts where people have observed OH (aka Hydroxy radical).
The stronger sources are doable with a small dish as demonstrated by a number of people.
Best regards,
Wolfgang

You may have a bit of mutual interaction between the feeds.

I suggest you try measuring some H line data & test the variations.

I'd not trust a model with these near field changes, and there are other components
( electronic ckt board & cables ) that may alter the pattern shape .
There is influence from one to another , but as the interaction is complex , testing is preferred .

We're going to be bringing an 2.3m dish on-line for a combined H1/OH+ observing campaign.  The dish size is a little bit small, but the dish would otherwise be purely
decorative, for reasons I won't go into here.

We're using a dual-polarization "can" feed for 21cm.  Such feeds have adequate performance up to about 1650MHz or so.  So the feed probes are feeding broad-band
LNAs, and we're hoping for the best.

Detecting OH masers is doable with a relatively small dish, but not easy. I have detected a few of these with my 3 metre dish. The spectrum below is of NML Cygni, one of the strongest circumstellar OH masers at 1612 MHz. The integration time was about 2.5 hours. With a smaller dish it will be more difficult to detect, and you will need more integration time to reach the same SNR. I remember my friend Job tried to detect NML Cygni and a few other OH masers with his 1.8 metre dish, unfortunately most of his results were inconclusive.
So in summary I think that detecting OH masers with dishes significantly smaller than 3 metres will be very difficult.

I have room and mounts for several of these dishes.

Will combining two H-Line feeds from the same dish work?

If so, could we combine two dishes and 4 feeds with the Kraken SDR or some other type of Interferometry device?

I want to know if anyone has had any luck utilizing the Kraken SDR with interferometry to combine multiple Discovery Dish H-Line feeds together simultaneously?

Is a Tri feed too much?

Thank you for your thoughts.

Eduard Mol - Regarding your success in getting NML Cygni with your 3m Radio Telescope at 2.5 hours, does your 3m track the sky?  Or, did you do this with drift scan gathering data over multiple days and then combining it to get the 2.5 hours?

Thanks,
Doug Holland

Hi, I also reacted to your question on YT but will repeat it here for others who may be interested in OH masers:

For my NML Cygni observation I manually adjusted the ALT and AZ of the dish to keep the star in the beam. However, NML Cygni is not very variable as far as I know, so doing multiple driftscans over several days to build up integration time would also be fine.

Sorry for all the confusion…
Dough asked both here in this thread and in the comments under one of my videos the same question about how I observed NML Cygni. So I replied with the same answer both here and on YouTube…

By the way, here’s the link to that video, it was about my 3 metre dish but is otherwise unrelated to my OH maser observations:

Eduard -
Thanks for the information.  When I looked it up on the maser database (maserdb.net) I found an observation of 500 Jy and one of 1921 Jy.  So, I was wondering if it changed its characteristics too quickly for me to get it with drift scans.  Thanks for the clarification..

Hi Jeff,

I don’t think this is NML Cygni. First of all it’s at the wrong frequency (the OH maser line is at 1612.231 MHz). Secondly the peak looks way too bright; when I did my observations I did not see the maser in the IFaverage window, only after averaging and processing atleast several tens of minutes worth of data did it appear.

Hi Doug,

These measurements were taken many years apart, the day to day variation is probably much less.

Thank you - I had read that the OH masers go through 'flaring' cycles, but I have not yet sorted out how quickly these flares come and go.  Working on figuring this out.
Thanks -
