Howdy folks,

Don't know if this is a "thing" or not, but I wanted to put out a lesson's learned for your consideration:

I'm running the Nooelec NESDR SMArt v5 SDR on my Raspberry Pi, using Ted's ezRA software, plugged into a USB 3.0 port.  After about 2 weeks of continuous use, I noticed the SDR would stop responding and the software would just sit.  I'd pull the files and they'd be mostly empty.

I thought at first this might be a problem with the specific socket I used so I switched to a different socket, still USB 3.0, and it started back up.  However, a few days later it would error out again.  Switched back to the other USB 3.0 socket and it started again.

Kept chasing this issue, tried various power supplies, securing the USB port better, yadda yadda.  Eventually I moved it to a USB 2.0 port and it's been running happily along for more than 2 months without issue.

I'm still not sure what's causing the response issues on USB 3.0, especially since it's only powering the SDR, no Bias Tee or anything like that.  Just thought I'd put that into the aether in case someone else runs into issues.

Thanks,

Hi Nathan,
If this is a software-addressable compatibility issue, did you try pestering Ted? He’s highly pesterable.

My $0.02

I've found that the USB subsystems on ARM-based SBCs are consistently flakier than their x86 counterparts.
I don't know why.  This has been true for RTL-SDR, AirSpy, and USRPs, across several different ARM-based
SBCs including all of the Odroid variants over the last 5 years, and Rpi boards.  Maybe rPi 5 is better, I guess
  time will tell.

But I moved my critical projects to an X86-based mini-pc platform and haven't had flaky troubles.

lol, I pester him plenty. Not sure what it is, I think the voltage draw on 3.0 might just be a little high causing it to flake out. Works just fine on 2.0 usb though, so I’ll sweat it later.

If you do a search on "raspberry pi usb problems" you get many "hit" so you and Marcus aren't the only ones.
I haven't had any problems but I probably don't stress the RPi like Marcus.
