Just in process of trying this out – so far (admittedly not very far) it is going well – in fact, I am very impressed.

The current version of Linux sub-system installs Ubuntu in a virtual environment under Windows 11 – I do not know whether it works under Windows 10.

For those of you who have used it a lot more than I have, where does Linux sub-system for Windows fall apart? At what point, is it important to use an independent installation of Linux Ubuntu (or another version Linux)?

You need to use usbipd to connect USB devices; some configuration is necessary. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/connect-usb

And I have just run into a major problem – this error:

Failed to initialize GTK running GNURadio under Linux Sub-system for Windows.pdf

GNU Radio folks suggest running it under Conda in Windows as solution!

…..So I think I will go back to primary installation of Linux, without encumbrance of Windows, or using directly under Windows, not one on top of other…...

Why can’t radio astronomy & radio stuff all be written for Windows, like other “proper” software?! (I appreciate that is a deliberately antagonistic question!)

Windows 11 is going to be untenable for real people. It is a thinly disguised effort at control and snoop. Just IMHO

Don, for whatever it's worth I agree and would add that It is designed to force a user to upgrade unneeded hardware unless you spend your life playing games.

Serious gameplayers are already using Linux (in for example steam) and leaving Windows.

You could consider installing a dual boot configuration so you can choose at boot time what system you want to use.
At our facility, my estimate is that we run about 40 Linux systems (including virtual machines). There are two dual boot machines in our presentation/conference rooms in case we need Powerpoint or other Windows based stuff.
Of course, the "Windows vs. Linux" topic a perfect for starting a flame war ;-)

The last sentence should read "Of course, the Windows vs. Linux topic is perfect for starting a flame war ;-)

And while we are at it:
I just noted that our favorite program suite for evaluating spectral data, namely GILDAS/CLASS from IRAM (https://www.iram.fr/IRAMFR/GILDAS/) is no longer available for Windows. These days it is Linux and Mac only.
The only hope for Windows aficionados is that more and more of the software is written in pure Python which makes it essentially OS-independent.
