Having played this game myself… Setting up an information website is “easy”. Setting up a website that handles peoples’ money is anything but. A shopping site must handle a lot of edge cases to protect your information so your credit card bill doesn’t show up with a extra few thousand dollars of expenses because it was hacked due to an outdated module or overlooked bug. (In addition to the triviality of developing the site, you need software/someone to monitor the site continuously to catch when – not if – it gets hacked.)
The commercial site that we rent for the store hosts multiple commercial sites and is paid to handle the security in addition to the store. (That also limits SARA’s liability.) The SARA information site is maintained by one person, part-time after this day job.
Companies have been destroyed by hackers. We don’t want that for SARA nor for ourselves so we do our best and rely upon others who are paid to think of the problems we cannot/do not.
I apologize for the rant, but this is an area that I used to work in (corporate backup specifically). I took my client’s data protection very seriously as the consequences were (and still are) dire. Annual training of the latest software development techniques and protection strategies were (and still are) mandatory. Review by others, regardless of their experience, was mandatory. Testing was mandatory by the developer as well as by others. AI has not replaced these efforts and training nor will it for a long time to come.
Ed
PS: Yes, in some ways the world we live in sucks and we have to pay the price. In others, it really is a wonderous place – grandkids, SARA, good friends, expressing your opinions, freedom to investigate things that make us think and grow...
