The recent posting about SID monitoring sparked some interest in the topic.

I have the following questions, about it:

1. Is it reasonable to consider making a PA0RDT mini whip (http://dl1dbc.net/SAQ/miniwhip.html) based SID monitoring station?

2. Anyone aware of GNU Radio based receiver (used with soundcard), on the software side?

I am a newbie and hence would appreciate your answers / suggestions about this.

Thank you,

Mathew--

Hi Mathew,

Might try here for a good SID monitor software from Nathan Towne:  https://sourceforge.net/p/sidmon3/activity/?page=0&limit=100#6205569fd7a028b5b9131246

The whip antenna is not as good as a directional loop.  At least in my experience.

But I haven't maintained it in 12(!!) years.

Thank you Rodney and Marcus for the responses.

Marcus, great if you could share any documentation of your setup is available.

Thank you.

I didn't really ever write it up.  But, basically, a loop antenna--about 10-15 turns on a 1.2m square frame.

I ran that into the balanced (XLR) input of a Behringer Mic-AMP:

https://www.amazon.ca/Behringer-MIC800-Ultra-Compact-Microphone-Modeling/dp/B000KUENNU/ref=sr_1_8?hvadid=284243157581&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9000707&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=14693268784148463225&hvtargid=kwd-303491954823&hydadcr=19155_9259885&keywords=behringer+mic+preamp&qid=1685285428&sr=8-8

Then into a 96ksps sound-card.
