Hi all,
Last weekend I shot a new video showing the whole process of assembling my modular 3 metre dish.

Best regards
Eduard

Hi Eduard

I was very impressed by your home made 3 meter dish. It must have taken a lot of work to design and fabricate it. Have you ever considered getting one of those large tarps that they use for covering damaged roofs. You could put the tarp over the dish to protect it during rainy days. Then you wouldn't have to spend the time to disassemble and reassemble it so often.

Eduard,
I like your method of breaking the dish apart for storage.  Combining  2 squares (small one is the base and large one is the one meeting at the perimeter) with the curved trusses gives you a lot of triangles which add rigidity to your design. Also makes the separations straight. Good design!

Well, rain is one thing (it can handle some rain) but then there’s often strong wind as well…

Thanks.

The design has evolved quite a bit over the past 8 years… it was originally built as an 8- segment dish with galvanized 1cm mesh. Did not work very well but it was a decent start in radio astronomy. Since then practically all the components have been revised or replaced at least once… last year I rebuilt the whole thing converting it to its current 4- segment design, but I reused many components such as the central hub, parabolic ribs and the mesh.

Did you design the dish and build it yourself? Impressive anyway.
Thanks.

Yes, although I had some help from my father and my friends.

It was built in 2017 as part of a school project, originally with 8 segments. Over the years many changes have been made.

Yesterday I disassembled it again, for this week a lot of rain and wind is predicted and I did not want to leave it outside in such bad weather. This time I tested a safer (and quicker) procedure: first remove the segments, then lift the central hub off the base with the help of my dad, and once that’s on the ground it is much easier to reach the feed and roll up all the cables and guy lines. No need to stand on a step ladder. It took about 40 minutes to disassemble the whole thing. The lesson here is that dishes 3 metres in size and larger are better managed by two people or a small team, even a lightweight modular design is already a bit too unwieldy for one person to handle.
