SARA Eastern Conference

I would like the ability to drive in USA when I visit for Eastern Conference - looks like I won't need it currently but just in case I get it in my head to drive.....

Question is do I need an international driving permit as well as my UK driving licence - I am arriving in Washington Dulles, and going to Green Bank, so those two and spots between I guess.

Andy,

 Definitively proof of auto insurance coverage is required to drive in all states and possibly a rental car purchased insurance is acceptable in most.  But you should check with the specific states requirements needed in W. Virginia, Virginia and Maryland for example.

I recommend   don't   try  driving in  USA.   When  I was visiting  in  North  UK   I looked  right  and  stepped in front of  a few cars ...  my friends  pulled  me  back   and  saved  my life.  You  can  get  a ride  with  either  Uber  or   Lyft.......

Uber  and Lyft  are  not  cheap  but  better than  getting injured!!!
