Hi all,

I recently uploaded a new video to my channel about my 1 metre dish:

I am planning to make a short series of video’s about observing the Sun, Moon and masers with this instrument.

Your videos are excellent, Eduard. Keep 'em coming!! Great resource for future too on YouTube. Perhaps you should ask Rich whether he would like to also host a copy of your videos on SARA YouTube channel? Would increase your audience.

Thanks Andy!
I’d be a bit hesitant to host copies of video’s at two seemingly unrelated channels (from YouTubes viewpoint atleast)- their automated systems (which are artificial, but not very intelligent) might flag one of the channels as the original copyright owner and nuke the other one…
That being said I saw an option recently to “invite a contributor” so that might be something interesting to look into.

There are dishes available on Aliexpress for 700 euros plus a very expensive shipping fee (another 700 to my place). According to the pictures, with a stand and a (non-motorized) polar mount. Hard to say what the diameter is, the title says 240cm, but in the specifications section below it says 180 cm. Never trust the numbers on Ali, they sell phone sized powerbanks, with 200Ah capacity :-)

if you buy from China buy direct! Better deal, depending on your GEO location.

In the past I purchased from made-in-china.com, for better pricing.

Warning: Earlier this year, I lost £500 on Alibaba, another direct contact website for China - in past i bought a wonderful 925 silver alto flute via same site, but this year lost money on trying to purchase a dish.

Aliexpress seems to have better protections, although I cant guarentee it. I also found that so called protection when paying via Mastercard was not worth the paper it was written on, due to the Chinese fraudsters using intermediate company to process credit card (Payoneer).

So, my advice - DO NOT buy direct from China, unless you really know who you are buying from, and what you are doing!

Andy

Thank you for sharing your experience and the cautionary note. I agree that it’s essential to do thorough research on any seller and not proceed with a purchase blindly, regardless of the country involved.

So far, my business transactions with suppliers in China have been positive, particularly for satellite dishes and related accessories. That said, I’m still very selective about what I buy and whom I buy from, and I generally would not source sensitive radio electronics components this way.

Your reminder about buyer protection and payment intermediaries is well taken and very helpful for those in this forum who are new to purchasing abroad.

Have a great day!

It is worth saying, Anthony, that I also purchased through Alibaba, the most amazing cavity filters - 19 elements - +/- 2MHz at 1420MHz, almost perfect cut-off, at £130 each! And the company offered to change the specs if they didnt suit me!

.....so buying direct China is a mixed bag of experience.....

I deal a lot with AliExpress, paying via PayPal.  Almost always had good experience getting refunds from AliExpress in the case of dodgy sellers. In the rare case of an issure the PayPal process works well to recover when AliE fails.
