Written to reflect my frustrations at trying to install Linux wheb i don't know what I'm am doing!
Happy for this to be published in SARA Journal if editor thinks it is appropriate to include it.

The screen awakens, black with cryptic light,
and I press the wrong key, yet hope it is right.
The cursor blinks, a silent mocking flame,
while guides and forums chant another name.

I type without knowing what I am doing,
each line of code a prayer I half believe.
The disk spins on, the partitions are stewing,
a dance of numbers I can barely weave.

Yet clarity hides in this forest of commands,
where each mistake becomes a whispered guide;
though trembling, still I stretch uncertain hands,
and stumble forward, nowhere left to hide.

For I press the wrong key, yet hope it is right
the dawn of Linux blooms from trial’s night

An interesting piece.

And I hope that you have found the way in the forest.

Andrew,
May I use your poem in my local ham radio club newsletter? We have some ham ops that are computer oriented and would be interested in reading it. Can reply to below...@gmail.com.

It takes a little bit to get the hang of Linux. But once you grok it, you'll never go back to windows.

Andrew,

Two  things,

1.  About   NanoVNA ..... to understand it    you must   have  a background   in    complex variables  and  impedance from  EE.  Basically  it  is complex  numbers and Eulers's  equation....       see  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euler%27s_formula   We used  Smith Charts   back in the  early  1970's.   I  failed my first  interview out  of  school,   at  Motorola,   because I got  the Smith  Chart  wrong.  Today    NanoVNA  does this.

2. About  installing  Linux   which distro  are  you trying  to  install?   I use  Ubuntu   ....

  1. complex variables  and  impedance from  EE”…….Urrrhh……yeh…..I’m not sure this phrase is in English but probably it is……all I want to do is display my NanoVNA on a screen for my very basic mini antenna range at EuCARA – I’ve got it on screen so far and NanoVNAsaver is connected to the NanoVNA but I cannot work out how I do SOLT calibration via the NanoVNAsoftware. I have worked out how to display S21 logmag……
  2. Ubuntu.

You  want  to reduce loses in  the cable    between   your   transmitter  and  receiver .  In  Ham radio Standing  Wave Ratio   is  used   but   what is  important  is reflected power ..So  due to  reciprocity   theorem it   works     both  ways. You must  compensate   for stuff   you are doing  for what you want to  accomplish...... kind  of  like my  hip  replacement......

You must calibrate    the ports so  that the vna will know how to  calculate  what  you are measuring.  Lets say   you  want to know  the S11,  reflectance    at    your  antenna  ..     do the  short   and open  cal at your  antenna  then measure....kind of like  my Doc  wants me  to fast  before my  blood draw..     to measure  some  stuff in  my blood.

Re: but I cannot work out how I do SOLT calibration via the NanoVNAsoftware

This is very easy using  NanoVNA-Saver.exe

1. Run the program and make sure your NanoVNA is connected.

2. In the Sweep Control panel set the frequency range. You can obtain
fine resolution (>> 100 points) by setting the number of segments.

2.1 In this panel you access the sweep settings.

3. Calibration

3.1 There is a Calibration button at the bottom ... Press it to open the
Calibration panel

3.2 Have ready your SOLT parts at the ready

3.3 Press the button that says Calibration Assistant and follow the
instructions.

3.4 Finally, save the calibration file for future use.

73's

Jeremy.
