For anyone that wonders, the three spired ancient building in many of these cartoons is the famous three-spired cathedral in Lichfield, originally built before 1000 AD, and which had a spire shot down by a cannon in the English civil war when roundheads attacked
royalists who sort refuge at the cathedral.
Lichfield is the home of:
Samuel Johnson (1709–1784) — probably Lichfield's most famous son. Born in Breadmarket Street, he became the celebrated writer, critic and lexicographer responsible for the hugely influential Dictionary of the English Language (1755).
Erasmus Darwin (1731–1802) — physician, scientist, inventor, poet and grandfather of Charles Darwin. Although not born in Lichfield, he settled here in 1756 and lived beside the Cathedral Close. He was a leading member of the Lunar Society and developed ideas
about biological evolution decades before his grandson.
David Garrick (1717–1779) — one of the most famous actors in British theatrical history. He was born in Hereford but grew up largely in Lichfield, studied under Samuel Johnson and travelled to London with him in 1737. Lichfield's Garrick Theatre is named after
him.
