Reminder that the next BAA VLF/SIDs meeting will be this week on Wednesday 22 April 2026 @ 19:00 UTC (20:00). This is of interest to anyone who is using SuperSID, UKRAA VLF Detector, or homemade detectors to explore the effects of solar flares on our planet’s atmosphere and other atmospheric phenomena.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Link for the meeting is below.

This week we are going to be treated to a talk by William Reeve, on the following:

Members of the UK Radio Astronomy Association started designing a VLF Receiver in 2006 and after development sold it in kit and built form. The system consists of three major components: VLF receiver, 0.4 m square loop antenna, and antenna tuning unit. A signal generator also was available for testing and tuning the receiver. All components still appear to be available in 2026. This presentation discusses: 1) Receiver system architecture and characteristics; and 2) Kit construction details.

Whitham Reeve obtained B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering at University of Alaska Fairbanks, USA. He worked as a professional engineer and engineering firm owner/operator in the airline and telecommunications industries for more than 40 years and now manufactures electronic equipment used in radio astronomy. He also is a part-time space weather advisor for the High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) and a member of the HAARP Advisory Committee. In addition, he does receiver design for the Long Wavelength Array in New Mexico USA and derivative arrays. He has lived in Anchorage, Alaska his entire life.
