I have the SDR in a remote box rather than running a coax.

In the past, the SDR & USB Extender box had been on a shaded screen porch and was ( by chance ) somewhat temperature stabilized

Over the past several months  I have been building and refining highly portable Disk Yagi antennas and for convenience, installed all electronics at the antenna.

What I  did not anticipate was that an AirSpy mini SDR is quite sensitive to temperature changes .   Not gain, but a significant change in spectral response : the filter shape changes .

Moving forward , I've finally stabilized the SDR by installing it within a small insulated box.  June 9th  was the first test of the TEC cooled , Resistive heated  thermal control system

I've never had such stable data .   An example is a spectrum plot set ( 135 ea) over 11 hours where the air temp changed from a morning low of 74F to a late afternoon high of  102F in the sunlit area around the SDR box ...

The large shift was due to the Sun transit within ~ 4 deg of the Declination +20 drift scan. It provides a nice separation of the 5 minute duration spectra scans.

Folks:

For what it's worth …

My local PBS station is currently airing the film "SMALL TOWN UNIVERSE". The film is being presented as part of the "REEL SOUTH" series. Here in North Carolina the screening of this film started at 2200 EDT.

So I understand that by the time this message makes it to the list its going to be finished.

<=30=> 🙁

You are going to need to admit that at last I tried. (I've been told many many times that I am very trying.)

Now I understand that only some of you folks will know why I'm bringing the screening to the SARA List-Server. I don't have time to type an explanation at this time.

It appears that this film has been edited "For content" and to fit the allocated time slot.

Clear skies and gentle breezes,
tdj

The movie was released at Tribeca film festival a few days ago, and has been awarded with best documentary feature, best cinematography and best editing.

Summary: “A remote, disconnected zone in West Virginia is home to one of the world's most sensitive telescopes and a community of vibrant individualists, who have found refuge in the quietest town in America.”

You will recognize the narrator – Dr. Jay Lockman

Thanks Chip, look forward to seeing this documentary.

I am familiar with Dr. Jay Lockman through his "The Great Courses - Radio Astronomy: Observing the Invisible Universe" series of which I've watched several times now.
I sent Jay an email to congratulate him on this brilliant series covering the many aspects of Radio Astronomy.

I asked him some time ago if there was any chance of a follow up series - Radio Astronomy Part 2...

Jay kindly replied saying the series had done well and that there may be some consideration to a follow up, but that was many years ago.
Maybe this new documentary is that follow up but rather do a series he made a short film?...

I'm just taking a quick look at the website "The Great Courses - Radio Astronomy: Observing the Invisible Universe"

It's interesting to note an "Update - Three New Discoveries" episode 25, it only goes for 13 minutes and was actually recorded January 2018, I'm only seeing this now!...but there's Jay giving us some insight into "Fast Radio Bursts", "Interstellar Chemistry" and "Wind from the Center of the Galaxy"...

Looking forward to this new program...again thanks Chip...
