I love your cute and creative idea! Thank you kindly for sharing step by step instructions! You guys look great in these pics! You totally inspired me to do a soup dumpling family costume with my newborn and husband! ? I dressed up as vinegar but pretty much copied your soy sauce idea verbatim, so thank you!!
Thank you so much for the tutorial! So kind of you to share and to include the pdf. I actually went to the craft store earlier this week and bought supplies to make these costumes after being inspired by your Instagram post! (We have a 6 mo old). How I was planning to recreate it was definitely more complicated in lots of ways, so thanks for the guidance! I am going to adjust because your way is so much better ? Love your blog. Have a Happy Halloween!
This might be my favorite post yet? This is so fun and you guys look amazing! The hat is my favorite part hahaha. So. good. Nori already has the best baby photos ever. I think she will love looking back on these one day.
Inspired by the colorful characters from this year's Hunger Games- I decided to share a DIY Halloween makeup tutorial based on the Capitol's own, Effie Trinket! Those of you who have read the books or seen the movies know that this out of touch fashionista loves wearing colorful wigs and wild makeup. Here's your how-to guide to recreate her look.1. Prep the skin with a primer (Makeup Forever HD Primer)
2. Apply a porcelain foundation all over the face and use a purple eyelid primer from the lash line to the brow extending outward across the temples (M.A.C. NC 15/ Maybelline 24hr Color Tattoo in Painted Purple)
8. After covering the lips with foundation, use a lavender cream concealer to paint the lips slightly smaller than their natural shape. To get the blue outline I used an angle brush and a blue shadow on the edges of the concealer (Makeup Forever Camouflage Palette/ M.A.C. Winkle)
For this tutorial I decided to design a game with a Halloween theme, I also wanted it to be quite small and easy to 3D print, so I came up with this Tic Tac Toe game. xShape was easily the best choice for me to model the pumpkin and witch hat parts because it is quite effortless but also so much fun! For the game base part I modeled it within SOLIDWORKS, you can download it here. I used 3DPrint UK to print my game in PA2200 Polyamide 12 (Nylon 12), you can see the result below.
I began with the pumpkin, the first thing I did was to create guide sketches to help me model my parts to specific sizes. Selecting the XY plane I sketched a 32mm circle to determine the pumpkins overall circumference and another sketch onto the YZ plane with a line from the axis up by 30mm. This was for the overall height of the pumpkin, including the stalk. I used the globe subdivision shape, and dropped it onto the center of the axis, unchecking midplane so that the shape sat on top of the XY plane while remaining center to the axis. I decided to model a segment of the pumpkin which I could later circular pattern. Viewing my shape from the front, I shaped the front profile of the pumpkin. One tool I found very useful when modeling my pumpkin was the symmetry tool, turning on the symmetry tool and selecting the YZ plane which was center to my pumpkin front profile. When turned on, I could move points on one side of the shape and the opposite side mirrors automatically.
When I select the row of points across the hat, the robot wants to rotate based on the selection, I needed to change this to align with the XYZ axis. That way when I rotate points they go along my axis, this just makes my model easier and cleaner to work with. From here, it was just a case of rotating the other loops to bend the hat further all along and up to the tip of the hat. Again, I can be quite free in my modeling, sometimes its just trial and error seeing how your model will change as you push and pull points, but it is really fun to see your design take shape.
I have always been a huge fan of the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland. It is definitely one of my favorite rides there! I think it has inspired a lot of my Halloween dcor too. I just love that spooky Victorian look!
To get the image to stand up straight and look right, add a tiny bead of hot glue to the inside of the front of the ball opening. Press the tab on the transparency that is in the opening onto the glue bead.
Now you can add your crystal balls to your Halloween candlesticks! If you have children, pets or husbands that are likely to bump, pick up or mess with these, I highly recommend gluing them into the candlesticks.
Wow, what an amazing craft! I LOVE these! I adore the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland, too, and this project is just amazing! I live in San Diego, too- Laurie from Gallamore West has had such nice things to say about you, I thought I would come check out your blog and say hi :) You have such great ideas!
these are the coolest things i have seen in a very long time as far as halloween decor goes. really! i buy up candlesticks when i see them and make cake plate bases out of them but i have extra and would love to try this. my kids are a little older so i might try with them.
thanks so much for the awesome share. found you via google+ through another blogger and am following.
have a great rest of the week. come by and visit sometime. :)
Oh my goodness, Bev. These are fantastic! I went straight to Hobby Lobby, got the glass balls and transparencies and came right home and made them. They are wonderful. Thank you so much for the tutorial and for teaming up with Karen at the Graphics Fairy to provide us with the printable.
These have to be one of the most amazing halloween decorations I have seen, and since halloween is really big for my family I have seen tons!!! And so easy, these will definitely be on our list to do this year.
I noticed how Great of a Halloween gift this would be . And would like to purchase a few of them .
If you could sent me information where I can purchase them I would be thankful..
thanks , Bill Scott @ rstbenard1002@ Comcast.net
You are wonderful at doing tutorials. This is the best explanation of putting transparency in a Christmas bulb that I have seen yet. I never could get how people did this until now. Thank you so much! And this idea is unbelievably cool. Thanks so much for sharing it.
Loved this idea, got everything ready but my printer would not print on the transparency paper. I am going to Office Depot tomorrow and have them print it for me. Other then that I am ready to go. Thanks so much for this great idea. I got 2 old and very ornate wooden candle holders and it will look great in my haunted house. Thanks again, Kathleen
Hi just finished this awesome project. mine turned out great! Wanted to share something I learned. When rolling up and inserting one of the transperancies, I messed up the smoke inside. I poured a little salt in placed my finger over the hole and shook it. It removed most of the smoke and I was able to re-smoke it. (Like it never happened!!) :) thanks for the super great project! Love them
Made these tonight and they turned out great! Tip, make sure your bulbs will fit in your candlesticks. I wanted to use the larger size bulbs and enlarged the pictures only to discover the opening for my bulbs was too big. Luckily I had the smaller size on hand and was able to redo them.
I found this after Halloween, but I need to remember it! I think it would be cute to get images of snowmen, snowflakes, stuff like that, and add to green and red candlesticks for Christmas decoration also!
My transparency also just slid thru my printer and I finally taped a blank sheet to the back and it finally printed on it. I left it for a day to make sure it was dry, I wore latex gloves so I would not get finger prints on it when I rolled it up but all the ink smeared off anyway. Do you have any suggestions. It,s making me crazy! Please help if anyone can. Thannks
If you have old colored round glass Christmas ornaments and a funnel, you can remove the metal cap from the ornament, pour in a small amount of bleach and slosh around. Viola! clear glass balls! Rinse out and let dry. You are ready to make your Halloween globes.
I absolutely love these! I would love for you to come over and link up to the Hauntingly Beautiful Decor Halloween Link Party at You can link up all through October, old or new posts. I really enjoyed this tutorial!
MATERIALS NEEDED jeweled cat ears black & white multisticks false eyelashes (and glue) loose gold eyeshadow pigment gold liquid eyeliner black liquid liner (pen & bottle form) black eye pencil black liquid lipstick mauve lip liner gold sparkle eye shadow fall-toned eye shadow palette paint palette with neutrals a leopard print top/dress/outfit
STEP TWO // complete your face makeup I had makeup on prior to starting this tutorial and is really helped speed up the process. Foundation, powder, bronzer, a peachy-toned blush, etc. Feel free to be heavier handed with the bronzer and blush so that it really shows through after applying everything else.
Additionally, before drawing on the bottom liner, I took my white multistick and lined my waterline and directly under my lash line with white for a larger than life eye look. Last, I applied my lashes! I also used the paint palette for my undereye and brows. I took the lighter brown middle color and an angled liner brush to give my brows some definition and a color similar to the rest of the look. I used the bottom middle color under my eyes after I had cleaned up any fall out and liner mistakes. It helped to create a beautiful bright undereye and the tone is perfect for this leopard look.
Next, I took my liquid liner and drew wings out from the sides of my upper lip to resemble more of a cat-shaped mouth. Using that same liquid liner, I lightly swept on some whiskers. Then used a normal black eyeliner pencil to carefully dab dots above my upper lip. The lower lip was probably my favorite because of the gold coloring. I used a mauve colored lip liner to line and partially fill in my lower lip. Then on top, I took a loose gold pigment on an eyeshadow brush and dabbed that onto the center of my lip (I even added a little of the gold eyeliner!).
