SAP Annual Conference 2024

St. Anne's College, University of Oxford, 28 - 30 June

(N.B. This will be an in-person event - there will be no hybrid attendance option.)

Open themed event
The SAP Annual Conference returns to St Anne's College Oxford in 2024. We look forward to  The event will be an open themed applied philosophy conference (papers will be given across a wide range of topics in applied philosophy).

Call For Papers:

The Call for Papers is now open. The deadline for submissions is Monday 15 January 2024.

Submission process

Individual / Co-authored papers:
  • Please submit a 1500 word abstract AND 300 word synopsis here.
Panel proposals:
  • Please submit a 1500 word outline of the session along with a 300 word abstract for each of the papers in the panel here.
Submissions will be assessed following the deadline and an outcome will be advised in (late) February / (early) March 2024.

Annual Conference Postgraduate Essay Prize
The SAP will consider applications for a postgraduate essay prize (£500) to one student for an outstanding essay submission.

Chairpersons
Chairpersons will be required for some of the sessions at the conference.  Chairpersons are responsible for introducing speakers during one (or more) of the concurrent sessions, ensuring the session begins and ends on time, and for chairing Q&A after the speaker’s presentation.  Chair persons must hold or have held an academic position in philosophy or have completed or be completing a PhD in philosophy.

If you are interested in being included in the programme as a chairperson for one (or more) of the sessions please contact ad...@appliedphil.org (please state academic position, etc. and institutional affiliation).

Funding opportunities

The society is proud to support a range of activities in applied philosophy.
  • Event Funding of up to £3000 (deadlines: 01 Jan, 01 May, 01 Sep)
  • Doctoral Scholarship awards (up to £10,000 in year of award)
    Awards are available to UK applicants and to applicants based in EU / EEA  EFTA countries  
     (Applications can be submitted from 01 May 2024.)
  • Post-Doctoral Fellowships up to two one-year fellowships, worth £16,000 each, will be awarded each year to support post-doctoral research to be undertaken at a university in any country
  • Research Trip support - financial assistance to enable those working in applied philosophy to pursue their research away from their home institution (deadlines: 01 January, 01 April, 01 July, 01 October.)
  • Teaching Relief funding for limited teaching relief to support the completion of a research project (e.g. a monograph or journal article, grant application).
  • Further Support The Society will also consider applications for other forms of research support not covered by the above schemes.

Membership of the SAP is open to anyone interested in its aims, whether or not they hold a philosophical qualification or are employed as a professional philosopher.
