தேடிச் சோறு நிதம் தின்று....English Translation 

.                         Trifle of a life!

(English Translation of Subramania Bharathiyar poem-- by Natarajan Ramaseshan)

With the hunt

for the

daily morsel

begins the

rat race.

Cock and bull stories

consume all the

crowding

hours.

Piqued and pained

at the

pettiness of others,

people pay them back

in coins of their

own.

Grey hair,the

gradual  gift of growing years

glibly speaks on

gerontology.

Slowly but surely

this mortal

sheath is

shed.

Oh,Goddess Kali!

Like these queer folks,

will I ever

allow this

trifle of a life to

wither me away into

wastefulness?

               SUN

Oh sun !

What have you done to

darkness ?

Have you

               driven it?

               slain it ?

               or

               gobbled it up ?

Did you conceal it

in your kissing embrace 

with hands of rays ? 

  

Is darkness your 

foe or food?

Is it your lady love

dismayed at your

absence thro' the night    

and thus

turned black ?

  

Overjoyed at your

emergence, 

did it imbibe your

radiance and blend

with you ?

 

Are you both 

children of the same mother? 

Did your mother

ordain 

both of you

to protect the world 

by  

coming in turns?

Are the two of you

immortal ?

or the 

divine elixir 

itself? 

I hail you both!

 Oh sun!

 I hail you !

ஞாயிறே, இருளை என்ன செய்து விட்டாய்?

            ஓட்டினாயா? கொன்றாயா? விழுங்கி விட்டாயா?

            கட்டி முத்தமிட்டு நின் கதிர்களாகிய கைகளால்

            மறைத்து விட்டாயா?

            இருள் நினக்குப் பகையா?

            இருள் நின் உணவுப் பொருளா?

            அது நின் காதலியா?

            இரவெல்லாம் நின்னைக் காணாத மயக்கத்தால்

            இருண்டிருந்ததா?

            நின்னைக் கண்டவுடன் நின்னொளி தானுங்கொண்டு

            நின்னைக் கலந்து விட்டதா?

            நீங்கள் இருவரும் ஒரு தாய் வயிற்றுக் குழன்தைகளா?

            முன்னும் பின்னுமாக வந்து உலகத்தைக் காக்கும்படி

            உங்கள் தாய் ஏவி யிருக்கிறாளா?

            உங்களுக்கு மரண மில்லையா? நீங்கள் அமுதமா?

            ஞாயிறே, உன்னைப் புகழ்கின்றேன
