கர்நாடகத்தில், துப்ப என்றால் நெய். துப்ப தோசை என்றால் நெய்த்தோசை - உடுப்பி உணவகங்களில். சென்னையில் 'வுட்லண்ட்ஸ்' கிருஷ்ணராவ் கண்டுபிடித்துப் பிரபலப்படுத்தியது மசாலா தோசை, துப்பத்தில் சமைப்பதாகும். துப்பம் நெய் என்று பெரியாழ்வாரும் பாடியுள்ளார். பழந் தெலுங்கிலும் உண்டு. துப்பு/துப்பம் தாதுமூலம் என்ன என்றும், எந்த மொழிக் குடும்பத்தைச் சேர்ந்தது என்றும் ஒரு நூற்றாண்டுக்கு மேலாக ஆராய்ந்துள்ளனர்.

tuppa "ghee" and its Dravidian root (dhātu)

Tamil has um-/uv-/up- set of words connected with salt. (i) umaNar = salt traders; (ii) uvari = salty land; (iii) uppu = salt. Like this set, there are other sets where the second letters are -m-/-v-/-p-. Another classic example is: tum-/tuv-/tup- "red color". Dr. Herman Tieken has an article (1996) published where he argues for tuppu as a Dravidian word. He tries to connect with "red color", but tum-/tuv-/tup- "red color" is not the dhātu root for tuppa "ghee".

Look at the Vākai tree's flower which has fibres on the top. It is described as "vaakait tuy vii". vākai = albizia lebbeck tree. Also, consider the fibers on the head of monkeys, Sangam literature calls them as "tuyt talai manti".
This root, tuy is used in a Kannada word also. "Kannada dictionary do not call tuppa as a loan word, it tells the word tuyyal (Kannada word for pāyasam) and tuppa are from same source." Ghee is an important ingredient for pāyasam. Let us look at some connected words in Kannada with tuppa (Kittel), basically they are all linked to *tuy-* root of Sangam Tamil texts.
(1) ತುಪ್ಪಟ tuppaṭa (p. 774)
ತುಪ್ಪಟ tuppaṭa. = ತುಪಟ, ತುಪ್ಪುೞ್, etc. wool (My.; Te. ತುಪ್ಪಟೆ), etc.

ತುಪ್ಪೞ tuppal̤a. = ತುಪ್ಪೞು. the plumage on some pigeon's legs (B. 3, 114), etc. ಪಕ್ಷಿಯ ತುಪ್ಪೞ (ಗಱಿ G.). see ಅಂಚೆದುಪ್ಪೞ.
(3) ತುಪ್ಪೞು tuppaḻu (p. 774)

It is from this Dravidian root, tu(y)ppa = tuppa "ghee" is formed. When curds are churned in a pot using churn-rod (mattu), a fluffy, fibrous butter floats on top of the buttermilk which resembles the tuy in Sangam texts. From this tuy "butter", tuyppu/tuppu "ghee, clarified butter" is made.
