அரட்டை என்னும் தமிழ்ச்சொல் இந்தியாவின் பல்வேறு மாநிலங்களில் பலராலும் பேசப்படுகிறது. சமூக ஊடகங்களில் விவாதிக்கப்படுக்து. ஃசோகோ நிறுவனம், அதன் தலைவர் ஸ்ரீதர் வேம்பு "அரட்டை" (Chat) மாற்ற வேண்டுமா, வேண்டாமா என இரு தரப்பு வாத - பிரதிவாதம். இந்த நிலையில். அரட்டை (< அரளு-தல்) என்னும் சொல் ஆராய்ச்சியும், தமிழ்/திராவிட மொழிகளின் முதல் எழுத்தாய் அ- வரும்போது பல சமயங்களில் அது அழிந்து வட இந்தியாவில் இருப்பது பற்றியும் எழுதினேன். அதில் இச்சொல்லும் ஒன்று ஆகும். ட்விற்றர் தளத்தில் 20 மணி நேரத்தில் இந்தியாவின் பல்வேறு மாநிலங்களின் ஊர்களில் இருந்து 3300 பேர் படித்துள்ளனர்.

The Tamil word, araṭṭai has gained nationwide recognition in India, largely due to Zoho's messaging app, Arattai. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arattai . If a majority of Indians around the world begin using Zoho's Arattai — and its features are developed to match those of WhatsApp — it could become a powerful alternative. With greater investment from Zoho, strategic promotion, advertising, and even support from the government, both at the Center and State levels, this vision could very well become a reality. As AI improves, Arattai app should have the capability to do real-time translation between any two Indian languages speakers, as translation between two Indian languages is way simpler than, say, between Indian and European languages. This is because India is a Linguistic Area, formed by ancient history.
Etymological note: Let us look at the word origin of Arattai to show the relation between India's two classical languages. India is a Linguistic Area (Prof. M. B. Emeneau, UC, Berkeley). Even though many regions of the world produce retroflex sounds, Systemic retroflexion with phonemes and as letters in the alphabet (actually, abugida) is in India for 3000 years and not in any other language.
One of the main contributors that makes "India as Linguistic area" comes from retroflexion. In Dravidian languages, -ḷ-/-ṇ-/-ṭ-(ṟ) letters in second or third position form a whole set of words with close semantics. This happens in the word-set that includes araṭṭai. This is a fundamental rule for the genesis of retroflexion in Dravidian languages. I will put together an article with 50 or 100 word-sets with -ḷ-/-ṇ-/-ṭ- showing the source of retroflexion in India. For example, arangam > rangam "islet between two rivers" Tiru arangam > Sri rangam etc., Likewise, raṭ- < araṭ-(ṭu) and raṭnā- Over time, word-initial a- was lost in the North.
