node.js meetup notes

Hey peeps,

So we had our node.js meetup last night and things went reasonably
well. Thanks, cruzio, for letting us use their space. Here are some
notes.

a. I think there was enough demand to justify having a recurring
meetup, but at least one person mentioned thursdays might not be the
best day.

b. I gave my "a couple slides about node" presentation, which was
aimed @ peoples experienced with tech, but new to node. You can see

c. I put together a VirtualBox VM with nginx, node.js and express
pre-installed. It even has an auto-launched node-based admin-interface
that lets you configure users for the VM.

d. James Halliday ( aka Substack aka http://substack.net/ ) showed us
some of the COMPLETELY AWESOME things he's working on:

d.1. if you have to test web-apps on multiple browsers, stop what
you're doing right now and go look at http://browserling.com/ (no
seriously, check it out!)
d.2. http://testling.com/ is a little less flashy, but just as
interesting (command line tool to test javascript snippets in multiple
browsers)
d.3. https://github.com/substack/dnode -- RPC for browser peoples.

It was a lot of fun, and seriously, go check out browserling.com right now. James blew my mind a few times last night. 

As usual there's some interesting node.js related links in http://javascriptweekly.com/archive/63.html and you can subscribe at their home page if you like. 

There's so much creativity and productivity coming out of node.js right now, it can be hard to absorb, let alone keep up with. How do *you* keep up with the latest in the node.js community?

I am sorry I missed the first meetup but was needed at home. I have been following node.js for sometime now and I see some great potential and work being done. The one tiny project barely scratched the surface back over a year ago. I thank you for getting this going and I will try to be at the next one.

One question that came up early in the meetup was "why node.js? what makes it good?"

It's a great question, and while I wish I had a two sentence answer, the world just isn't quite that simple yet. 

Fortunately James has a slightly longer answer, that in my opinion is one of the best yet:

Of course he left out a lot of other great features and qualities of the language, focusing instead on something fairly subtle, which is programming style. But I personally feel a lot of the other advantages of node.js flow from this source.
