Hi everyone,
I apologize for a slightly non geeky and opinionated local political email. Ignore if uninterested.
I'm writing you, as leaders in this community, to ask that you make your voice heard on an important local issue next Tuesday night. The City Council will be meeting at 7 pm to decide whether to certify UCSC's environmental impact report and application to LAFCO. These are the final steps in the historic agreement that was reached to end the conflict between the university and community. The agreement has dramatically improved the relationship between the city and university and has reduced impacts to our housing and water supply as well as creating conditions for exciting new cooperative economic development and infrastructure projects. UNLESS YOU INDICATE YOUR SUPPORT ON TUESDAY NIGHT, ALL OF THIS PROGRESS IS IN PERIL.
The opponents are pushing very hard to delay and/or blow up the agreement. There will be 10-15 of them at the meeting and it is vital that we have other voices in the room.
Please find the time to be at the meeting -- and bring friends and loved ones. If you cannot be there, please email your support for the agreement to: cityc...@cityofsantacruz.com

My two cents:
The agreement between the city and UCSC is, indeed, historic and represents a great deal of compromise from both sides. UCSC is the single most important institution in our community. It is a source of jobs, a source of funding, a source of broad economic opportunity, and a source of world-class research and ideas. Yes, it is also a source of traffic and loud, drunken students. And its growth will certainly consume some of our precious resources, like water and open space. But to me, the good far outweighs the bad. Even better, UCSC has agreed to take unprecedented steps to create more of the good stuff and to mitigate the bad stuff.
The people who are seeking to undo this historic agreement are, in my opinion, backward-looking and obstructionist. Worst of all, they completely fail to recognize that by undoing this agreement, they put our future prosperity in jeopardy. Many of us on this list are working tirelessly in our own ways to create future prosperity in Santa Cruz. Instead of being backward-looking and obstructionist, I believe that most (if not all) of us are forward-looking and seek to create opportunities, not destroy them.
Finally, in these cash-strapped times, the thought of UCSC and the City of Santa Cruz spending hundreds of thousands of dollars of taxpayers' money on continued litigation makes me want to vomit.......

@Shane I'll do my best to make it, and right on for sending out the email... does it matter whether we're actually city residents? I'm in Scotts Valley to live, but in SC a whole bunch.
@sean : I've found logical/factual arguments tend to be a turn-off for lots of folks. IMHO, we make decisions on the basis of what's logical/factual only so that we can make larger, more significant decisions on the basis of things that make no explicable sense whatsoever. At the end of the day, it seems like the irrationality of arguments is frequently what makes them so potent in the minds of true believers.

Is there a public document available that delineates the details of
the current proposal? My inclination is to offer support but I'd like
