An Alabama company will pay the Illinois Department of Transportation
$40 million to settle a state lawsuit over a damaged portion of Joliet
Road in suburban McCook.

IDOT alleged that Vulcan Materials Co. of Birmingham damaged a mile-
long section of Joliet Road that bisects its McCook quarry. That
portion of Joliet was closed by IDOT in 1998 after IDOT experts
concluded that the road was destabilized from years of mining and was
no longer safe to use.

IDOT will receive $20 million in 10 days, and will be paid the rest
within nine months, according to a Vulcan statement. Vulcan did not
admit liability.

U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-Illinois) said the closure has been “an
issue of concern” to people in the area and he’s happy a settlement
had been reached. “There’s not a month that goes by when someone
doesn’t ask me what’s happening with Joliet Road,” Lipinski said.
“It’s essentially been in limbo for the last decade.”

Since the closure, traffic has been re-routed to arterial roadways.

Lipinski said that IDOT is holding meetings in communities affected
by the road closure to hear what people want done with the money to
help with traffic flow.
