Canta, Violino!, featuring Andrew Finn Magill Band: Brazilian choro
                                         Tuesday, Feb 20  7:30pm

“It’s nice to see fresh, young musicians carrying on the traditions of Brazilian music.
Finn Magill displays a love and authenticity that can fool you into thinking he is from Brazil.
His style is playful and light, yet soulful and passionate.”

                                                   - Airto Moreira (Miles Davis, Weather Report, Chick Corea)

Canta, Violino! is the brainchild of American violinist Andrew Finn Magill who has been
featured on NPR, PBS, and MTV.  Choro was the first popular Brazilian music, emerging in
the 1870s, and is the precursor to samba, bossa nova and modern popular Brazilian music.
Renowned for its virtuosic musicianship and diverse rhythmic palette, it is one of the most
exciting instrumental genres on the planet.

Brazilian percussionist Airto Moreira says of Finn:
"He can fool you into thinking he is from Brazil!"

Finn grew up studying Irish, old-time, and bluegrass with dozens of the best fiddlers in the
world every summer at The Swannanoa Gathering in Asheville, NC.  In 2005, he debuted a
collection of traditional and original Irish music with Drive & Lift. In 2009, Finn was awarded
a Fulbright-mtvU Fellowship to spend a year in Malawi co-writing and co-producing a concept
album about HIV/AIDS with Malawi pop icon Peter Mawanga. The result, Stories of AIDS:
Mau a Malawi, is a soundscape of traditional Irish and Malawian sounds reimagined with an
Afro-pop production and a riveting message of social justice. It was the inspiration for a
multimedia show of the same name Finn wrote and co-directed with Jon Haas and Joseph
Megel, and which debuted at the University of North Carolina’s Memorial Hall in October 2011.
He moved to Brazil in 2014 to immerse himself in Brazilian choro music. Returning to the U.S.
in 2017, Magill was signed to Ropeadope Records to produce "Canta, Violino!" in 2018 and
"Festa!" in 2021.

“Andrew Finn Magill is an extraordinary violin virtuoso who has taken a super deep dive into
Brazilian music and culture. Check out his “muito calor” original tunes —they have all the
energy and groove of Rio, with a healthy helping of American spin and improvisation! Meu Deus!!!!!"
-Matt Glaser, Artistic Director American Roots Music Program Berklee College of Music

Cesar Garabini:  7-string guitar
Brazilian-born Cesar Garabini moved to New York City in 2011 to expand his musical
knowledge. Since then, he has performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Jazz Standard, Birdland,
Columbia University, and the Museum of Modern Art. He has worked with Anat Cohen, Olli
Soikkeli, Leny Andrade, and Marcos Sacramento among others, and has been featured on
NPR, NBC and Brazil's national TV network Globo.

Ami Molinelli:  percussion
Ami is a professional percussionist and educator specializing in Brazilian and
Latin percussion, especially the pandeiro. She is the co-leader of the Brazilian
choro and jazz ensemble, Grupo Falso Baiano. Ami received her MFA from the
California Institute of the Arts and has studied at the Universidade Federal da
Bahia in Salvador. She has studied with master percussionists Michael Spiro, John
Bergamo, Randy Gloss, and Guello to name a few. Her extensive performance
and recording credits include theater, television (NBC) and live performances with
artists such as Luciana Souza, Jovino Santos-Neto, Los Angeles Symphonic Orchestra,
Allessandro Penezzi, Mike Marshall, Hamilton de Holanda, Teka, and John Santos.
